K of the 17th Alabama Inf. Reg. reported to Montgomery on September 9, 1861 and died December 11, 1863 in the general hospital at Miller Spring (probably in the Mobile area).Barbara Harrison was b. 4/12/1825 and d. 12/1/1872.There is a grave at Moriah Church with a rock coping that may be their grave.William F. Cheatham #252 was there only child and he was born 8/30/1844.William F. Cheatham enlisted 9/7/1862 at Mobile in Co. K, 17th Ala. Inf. Reg. and served throughout the war.He married Nancy Melinda Barganier #247 on 11/21/1867 and they were the parents of Mary E. #342, Betty Jane #346, and Verna #355.William F. and Nancy M. Cheatham were the grandparents of Enna Mae Kelly Gibson Porterfield #356 and Nannie Lou Gibson Talley #361.Enna Mae Porterfield and Nannie Lou Talley were the last members of Moriah Church.

Cheatham.Lee was living in Sour Lake, Texas where they moved.Lee was b. 1/16/1874, d. 1951 in Montgomery and their children were Nada married a Potter, Nina married a Wise and Eva married a Harrelson.

They all lived in Montgomery, Alabama.Leonardis was a son of Joseph Malachi Ellington, b. 3/30/1838, and Emmerline Knight, dau. of William and Mary Knight.Emmerline d. 8/3/1894 and Joseph d. 3/17/1920.Joseph and Emmerline are buried at Live Oak Cemetery east of Fullers Cross Roads.

2.1.1.8.S. Dempsey Cheatham b. 10/24/1889, d. 3/6/1947, m. Velera McBride, b. 11/6/1888, d. 11/2/1946, both are buried at Moriah, and they had no children.Dempsey broke his leg in two places in November 1924 while hauling logs to the saw mill.

Velera McBride was a daughter of Jesse J. McBride, see Book 20 of Probate Records of Butler Co.At the time of the death of Jesse J. McBride, Velera was a minor and was living with her mother, Floris H. McBride.Jesse J. McBride was the father of Mary E. McBride who m. 1stJames C. B. Henderson and m. 2nd Henry Chambers Stallings.Thus Aunt Valera Cheatham and the grandmother of Uncle Willie Stallings (See Stallings family) were sisters.

John H. Cheatham was a Private in Co. K, 17th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.Company K was known as the "Butler True Blues" and its captains were Thomas J. Burnett and T. A. McCane.

William F. Cheatham Application for Confederate Pension.Enlisted on Sept. 7, 1862 and paroled on May 2, 1865.Branch of the service:InfantryRank: Private, Company K of 17th Alabama."I belonged to General Joseph E. Johnson's Army, which surrendered April 26, 1865.I was on furlough of 20 days, was returning to the command and was stopped at Augusta, Georgia and was held there on provost duty by General Wright, in command, on May 2, 1865.This 20 days furlough and a 5 days leave of absence to bury my father (John H. Cheatham) was the only absence from duty I had during my enlistment.The war was over and I was paroled at Augusta, Georgia."Verification of service given by Levi Harrison of Agra, Ok. on July 20, 1916.

William F. Cheatham was a Butler County Commissioner for 8 years.

However we have on the 1850 census for Lowndes county a John Cheatham, age 8 months, listed in Andy and Elizabeth Cheathams household.John was not listed as an heir, he may have died.In Vol. 14, pages 124 & 125, 4/8/1873, of the Estate Records for Butler Co. of the estate of Guttridge Cheatham, John is listed and it is reported that the residences of the above are unknown.

From FamilyTreeMaker.com we find the following.Andrew Reynolds Cheatham was b. 1/11/1829 in Lowndes County, died May 16, 1865 in Columbia County, Arkansas, and m. Mary Elizabeth Ballard on 10/28/1847 in Lowndes County who was a daughter of William Ballard and Anna Forrest.Andy enlisted in Grinstead Regiment on 6/20/1862 in Magnolia, Ark. For 3 years.He took part in numerous battles in Arkansas and was wounded 4/30/1864 at Jenkins Ferry on the Saline River.Elizabeth came by wagon to the battle site and carried Andy home.The bullet was not removed and Andy lived for a year and six weeks, dying on 5/16/1865.He was buried in the Old Smyrna Church Cemetery about three miles northwest of Atlanta.Their children were:

WILL of JOHN CHEATHAM is located in Will Book B, page 128, Lowndes County Courthouse, Hayneville, Alabama.

We Thomas Ballard and Samuel Jordan of the county and state aforesaid do hereby certify that on Wednesday the sixth day of September instant, we were present at the house in which the late John Cheatham resided in this county and had resided between seven and eight years and in which he died.He was taken sick the Wednesday before but not confined to his bed until Saturday afterward and on the sixth instant sent for us to take notice or bare testimony of the following as his last will and testament, he was at that time very ill and died on Saturday the ninth instant. He the said John Cheatham said in our present that he wished his wife Mary Cheatham to have the following personal property "to wit" a negro woman named Lucy, two beds and furniture, two trunks, one horse with the first choice on the plantation and one little tin trunk.He said that he wishes his wife to do as she pleased with the negro woman above mentioned and made no other disposition of the balance of his property, and further stated that he wished his brother Daniel H. Cheatham to act as his executor.In testimony of we have herewith set our hand and seal this 25th. day of September 1843.
