Saul BELLEW married Martha J. GOLDEN 25 November 1852. Sarah BELLEW married Adarine WATERS 13 October 1853. James M. D. BELLEW married Nancy Ann CHAMBERS 25 Dec 1860. All marriages took place in St. Clair County, AL. Where did they all go after their marriages? Were there any children? This is one of my most puzzling "brick walls." Any clues appreciated!

> I am researching the HUMPHRIES/UMPRIES/HUMPHRERS/HUMPHREYS. My grandfather, William A. HUMPHRIES was born in Brompton, St Clair County, AL in 1870. I believe his father was Drury HUMPHRIES. His mother may have been Amanda O. HAMMONDS. > According to 1880 Census he had brothers Andrew 15, Baxter 13, Edgar 3, and a sister Ida 7. His mother was not listed. His father was listed as Drury age 60. A 1950 newspaper article in McNairy County, TN stated that his parents died when he was young (he was 9 in 1880) and he attended the old Harmony Church. That may be the grave location of his parents. > > William A. left AL and went to AR for 4 years and then came back to TN and married my grandmother in 1895. That means he left about 1891. > > I have access to the 1870 census but it is not readable. I don't have access to other census records, (EXCEPT 1880). > > Please advise if you have any information on Humphries or Hammonds.

REED, CAVEN Researching the family of Robert Reed, b. 1757,IR; d., 16 Jan 1842, Ashville, ST. Clair Co., AL. There appears to be a connection to the Reed Family of VA, specifically, William M. Reed [1777-1829]. My information indicates that Robert Reed was a son of Robert Reed, SR.and that his brother Richard Reed [1763- 1835] m. Jane Caven, Abbeville District, SC in 1788. William M. Reed [1777-1829] at age 31, m. Mary Harper, dau of William Harper (Harpers Ferry family) & Nancy Faris of Berkeley Co., VA; in Fayette county, OH, suggesting Mary may have been his second wife. Clues suggest this Reed family settled early in PA and members migrated to VA, KY, OH, IN, IL,IA,KS and OK. Another branch migrated to VA, SC, AL, MO, AR, TX & OK. A descendant of the Norther branch of the family m. a descendant of the Southern branch. The two branches eventually migrating to OK ath the time of 1889 Land Rush. One reference a connection of William M. Reed to Robert Reed, Jr.is, "Records of St. Clair County, AL." Any assistance in identification most appreciated. Thanks. Joseph R. Williams, 809 Harrison, Helena, MT 59601, PH. 406-442-0403 or the E-mail address until 1 Feb. 2000

I am looking for info on the SOUTHERN and WARD families who lived in Gadsden during the 1890s. My grandfather, Ollie Lee SOUTHERN, was born in Gadsden in 1892 to Jno (John) and Mary (Mamie) WARD. They were married in Gadsden in 1891. They later separated and Mary remarried Samuel CONNALLY and they moved to Central Texas in the early 1900s. John SOUTHERN was supposedly killed in a sawmill accident, unknown where or when. It is possible that John Southern is related to the SOUTHERNS in St. Clair Co. Myra J. SOUTHERN married James CALLAHAN in 1891 and she lived in St. Clair County. Mary Ward had brothers named Jim and Walter and a sister who married a Maxwell. Any info on the SOUTHERN and WARD families would be greatly appreciated. Linda

Mark Montgomery in Northern Virginia Mon May 29 14:14:29 2000
MONTGOMERY, William (1807-1891) SC AL MS also WEEMS, KEENE, LEVER. I am trying to find information on the ancestry of my great-great grandfather William MONTGOMERY (1807-1891) b. 22 FEB 1807, d. 13 MAY 1891. Conflicting census records indicate that he may have been born in SC, TN, or AL. SC is most likely. He settled permanently in Choctaw Co., MS in 1838 or 1839. On 7 Aug. 1838, he leased 240 acres in Section 16 of Township 17 for 99 years. Section 16 of each township was leased to provide support for the schools. There is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone in South Union Cemetery, Choctaw Co., MS. I have unverified information that William's father was Andrew MONTGOMERY b. Mecklenburg County NC ca. 1785. Andrew's father was James MONTGOMERY b. Lancaster County PA ca. 1735/45. James' parents were John MONTGOMERY Sr. and Martha ? both born in Ireland and immigrated ca. 1735. William may have lived in St. Clair County AL in the 1820s and early 1830s before possibly moving to Jefferson County AL. William had possible cousins in St. Clair County AL who were descendants of James MONTGOMERY's brother, Robert MONTGOMERY and Mary/Martha Robison/Robinson whose son John MONTGOMEY (1785-1870) and daughter-in-law Margaret Bicket (1793-1869) settled in St. Clair County AL by 1822. My great-great grandmother MONTGOMERY was Martha Ann ? (1816-1888) b. ca. 1816, d. 10 SEP 1888. Conflicting census records indicate that she may have born in SC, GA, or AL. SC is most likely. According to the 1880 Census, her parents were born in SC. Her maiden name was possibly WEEMS. There was a marriage bond for a William MONTGOMERY and Martha WEEMS dated 29 DEC 1833 in Jefferson County AL, but I have no proof that this is my William and Martha. Another clue is the death certificate of the youngest daughter of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY. Her name was Sarah (Sallie) MONTGOMERY MOSS. The death certificate in 1928 lists her mother as Mary W??????. The rest of the maiden name is illegible - maybe Wiemmes. William, Martha and their children were members of New Zion Baptist Church, Choctaw County MS. The children of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY were: Jonathan - b. AL ca. 1834 d. TX 1882, private C.S.A. 1862-1865, spouse Mary Elizabeth RICHARDS b. AL 1834 d. TX 1917, their children - William George. b. MS 1854 d. TX 1924, Emma Jean b. MS ca. 1856, Lou Ella/Louisa b. MS ca. 1858, Martha Ann b. MS ?. Amanda Jane - b. AL (1836-1890), spouse (1) William Eli BLAIN (2) John R. BAYS. Nancy Ann - b. AL (1839-1882), spouse James Wesley BLAIN b. SC, (1832- 1864). Elizabeth - b. MS ca. 1840. Anderson S. - b. MS (1842-1862), private C.S.A. 1861-1862 died in captivity St. Louis, MO. Jackson - b. MS ca. 1844. Sarah (Sallie) - b. MS, (1847-1928), spouse (1) Thomas ROBINSON (2) Doc C. MOSS. William Samuel (my great grandfather) - b. MS, (1850-1884), spouse Harriet Elizabeth KEENE b. MS, (1851-1940), their children - Martha Elizabeth b. MS (1873-1875), Anna Kate b. MS (1874-1950), spouse Monroe L. McCLURE, James Anderson b. MS (1877-1931) spouse Lela BARRON b. MS 1881, Lovie b. MS (1879-1879), Elizabeth b. MS (1880-1926) spouse James Robert POWER b. MS (1877-1948), Anna Bell b. MS (1881-1884), William Samuel (my grandfather) b. MS (1885- 1966), spouse Nena Bertha EVANS b. LA (1892-1982). Any leads will be greatly appreciated. I will gladly pay for any postage or photocopying costs and will pass along any new information that I receive. There is an old cemetary located on our farm 7 miles east of Ashville on County Rd. 24 between the John Looney House and Greensport Marina. There are two graves that have markers dating late 1800's, Jones. There appear to be about a dozen graves mostly lined with rocks or having a large rock at the head and a small one at the foot. We know that it was used as the community cemetary before a church was built in the area, but do not know of but two others buried there, Talleys. The families that once lived in the area were Currier, Jones, Oldham, Norrell, and Bowling. If anyone has any information about this cemetary please contact Kathleen Jester - Jesterfarms@aol.com I am planning to document all I can about the cemetary. Thanks for your help. Kat
