Peter MERIL was enumerated in the 1820 St. Clair Census. "A" Jonh T. MERRILL received a land Patent for approximately 80 acres of land in St. Clair County on October 20th, 1823. This date (10-20-1823) was the date the Patent was signed in Washington so the actual "claim" may have been as many as three years earlier. Peter MERIL named his only son John T. Merrill. What was Peter's relationship to the John T. MERRILL who patented this land? What became of him, his land, or his family? Indications point to SC and before then Virginia as to the origins of this family group. ANY - ANY help on them would be greatly appreciated. I posted a short query on this family in February before learning of the 1820 Census data. HELP!

I am looking for information on my paternal ancestors. I know that my father's parents were Vernon Clay ARNOLD and "Shorty". Vernon Clay was the progeny of my great-grandmother, "Granny" RITCH (she had been widowed by my great-grandfather ARNOLD, and I believe this was her name). She was born with the surname GENTRY, not sure if it was in St. Clair or not, but she lived there for as long as I know, and she died in August of 1995 (?). I know that she attended a Freewill Baptist Church near her home. Most of my paternal family is still in the St. Clair area, so I would appreciate any information about my grandmother or other potential family members, primarily ARNOLD and GENTRY. My father married my mother, from Calhoun County sometime after Vietnam. Thank you very much for your information.

On July 20, 1820, Henry BICKERSTAFF m. Cinthia C. (possibly Campbell) RAMSEY in St. Clair County. On May 2, 1819, John L. (possibly Luckie) BICKERSTAFF m Celia Ann HAMPTON. I have been told that one or both of these men served as Justice of the Peace in St. Clair County and that they were brothers and sons of Johnson BICKERSTAFF. I have not found proof of any of that. By 1830 Henry was in Tishomingo County, MS and John L. and Johnson were in Monroe County, MS. On Jan 3, 1833, Perry H. LOVELL m. Anjeline "Annie" HILL in St. Clair County. The family appears in the 1850 census of St. Clair County. The family moved to Tishomingo County, MS by 1854, since there was a daughter b. in MS, but by the 1860 census, Perry is not listed with the family. I have not found any information as to his death or burial. In 1857, their daughter Mary Casen "Polly" LOVELL m. William J. BICKERSTAFF. I have not found a connection between the BICKERSTFF and LOVELL families in St. Clair, but wonder if there might have been one. I would like to share information with anyone researching any of these families.

Looking to find a Civil War Monument in St. Clair County. I like to find those in the County Seat, in front of the County Court House. Love to find those Confederate soldiers standing on a pesestal in some forgotten corner of town. May find them in a corner of a cemetery somewhere, many times forgotten and neglected. I have located 25 across the state so far and photographed them all. I am looking to find all in Alabama and one day make a web site listing them by county. There are 67 counties and I know there will not be 67 monuments. Let me know what in is St. Clair County. It makes it much easier to find them by asking here first. I would love to list all items of Civil War Interest and document them by county. Let me kow what is out there, I will make a trip soon to photograph them. Will one day hope to have it all in a web site to share with all who have an interest in this history also. Thanks Chuck James Montgomery, Alabama

SAMUELS/WHITE/GREGORY Hello, I am looking for some distant ancestors who orginate from St. Clair County, Alabama. I would appreciate any assistance or possible leads. Here is a brief genealogical history: My ancestor, Elizabeth White (b. late 1700's?) married to an Elisha Samuels (b. abt. 1790) in that same county on October 16, 1822. Their children are as follows: Edwin (b. abt. 1823); George; and seven unknown siblings. Edwin married a Mary M. Gregory, also of Alabama. (Family lore states that Edwin stabbed a man and had to flee the area. He came home one night and led his family on covered wagon to California in the early 1850's, where we still are.) I hope that there may be a connection here. Zane Mc Intosh in California byool@hotmail.com

Cemetery Legends I am trying to locate the name of a cemetery and the story behind an old cemetery legend that I heard as a child. I believe the cemetery is located somewhere in either St. Clair County, Coosa County or Shelby County; probably off a county highway in a small town. There is a large set of steps that lead up to the cemetery right off the road. There are probably 20 steps leading up to it. Supposedly a baby is buried there, and at night you are supposed to hear the baby crying. I think someone told me that you were supposed to tap your foot on the stairs to hear the baby crying. I want to know the name and city of this cemetery, and also know the exact story behind it. There may be more that I cannot recall or different variations to the story as well. Please email me at Briana5555@aol.com as I rarely check the bulletin boards. Thanks!

I am seeking information re:Peter Roadlander. He was in Anson Co., N.C., Elbert Co., Ga. and St.Clair Co. Al. He married there in 1829 to Sarah (Dearman) Jourdan, widow of Stephan Jourdan. Peter is listed in 1850 census in the household of a Dill family, age 75. He apparently died prior to the 1860 census, as Sarah and Lucinda Roadland(er) appear in that census, but he does not. I've found several Roadlanders in Alabama census', but have no idea how they are connected, if any, to him. Roadlander relatives of Peter wound up in Dallas County, Missouri, as did persons of same names connected to him in Alabama: Dill, Jourdan(Jordan), Looney etal. I'll be most appreciative of any information regarding Roadlanders. God bless you.

PHILLIPS Samuel David Phillips b: 11 June 1867 (St. Clair); d: 14 July 1937. He married Sallie I. (or Sarah) SIMMONS on 2 Dec. 1888. She was b: 31 Jan 1867 (St. Clair); d: 14 Feb 1947. These are my great-great grandparents. I have information on Sallie Simmons, but I am stuck on Samuel David Phillips. I have the census information showing that he was the grandson of Meredith Phillips and Sarah Rebecca "Sally" Beasley; but I am not for sure about his parents. His mother was possibly widowed early or not married at all. Samuel David's death certificate lists his parents as R. O. Phillips and Martha ?. There is a daughter of Meredith & Sarah Beasley Phillips named Martha A. on the 1860? census of Walker County. I am looking for more information on Samuel David PHILLIPS ancestors. Thank you for any help.
