This data is a part of Robin Sterling's Blount County, Alabama Web Site Blount County Index.

Information presented here is primarily from the microfilmed Compiled Confederate Service Records with supplementary information from the 1907 Blount County Confederate Census, Blount County Marriage Records, Blount County Cemetery Records Volumes 1 - 3 (2002) by Sterling, 1850 and 1860 Blount County Federal Census, The Heritage of Blount County (1999 edition), the Southern Democrat and The Blount County Journal.

Captain William Graves originally established a Home Guard or Alabama Militia Unit made up of men from the Blount County area. His unit was one of several raised by the Confederate Conscript Bureau in 1863, including members from Marshall as well as Blount County. Possibly existing before 20 Aug 1863, Graves' unit operated out of Blountsville under orders of General Pillow of the Conscript Bureau. It was assigned to Major Joseph Barbiere's command as Company C in October 1864. The Battalion served principally in central Alabama until January 1865. The unit was headquartered at Wilsonville, Alabama in Feb 1865 and was reported as serving with the Alabama Reserves with six companies (A - F). It was assigned to, and included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana by Lt. General Richard Taylor at Citronelle, Alabama 4 May 1865.

The data was compiled from various sources including the 1907 Blount County Confederate Census, Confederate pension applications, the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System internet site, and the compiled service records of Company C of Barbiere's Cavalry. Many of the men in this list served in other Confederate organizations before or after their association with Captain William Graves.
