Thelmer Smith Submitted by Diane Bryant THE SOUTHERN DEMOCRAT (5 Oct 1944) Blount County Soldier Dies of Spotted Fever Thelmer Smith, 29, passed away September 12, 1944 in a hospital at Camp Shelby, Miss. His death was due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. He has been in the Army since October 29, 1943. He was a young man of high quality, always ready to help in any way he could. He made many friends during his life here. He was reared in Oneonta, where he had a host of friends to mourn his death. He was always kind to all he met, and was loved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Mrs. Florence Smith; his mother, Mrs. Mary Smith; and a sister, Mrs. Wilma Wade. Funeral services were held at Oneonta and Mt. Moriah, and were conducted by Revs. B.F. Dykes and L.T. Fendley. His body was laid to rest in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Brown-Service was in charge of the arrangements.
