Watts Cemetery

Directions: Located 10-12 miles west of I-10 and State Road 10 on SR10; on far side of cotton field north of SR10. There are no markers. Land plate ref: approx. NE 1/4 of NW 1/4, Section 21, R12E, T10N.

There are six graves there. The headstones read:
1."This is erected in the memory of John H Watts* who was born April 2nd, 1781 and died Oct. 20, 1841"
2. "In Memory of J.H. Watts, Jr., who died July 15th 1850 aged 29 years 7 months and 22 days"
3. "In memory of Prudence Steen, wife of Robert Steen who died July 22, 1850 aged 20 years 2 months and 10 days"
4. "Sacred to the memory of Augustus Watts who was born March 16, 1836 and departed this life December 7th 1858. Aged 22 years 8 months and 21 days" Verse follows with the notation "erected by his dear wife Sarah Watts".
5. "Sacred to the memory of Theodore Watts, youngest son of John H. and Prudence Watts who was born August 17, 1841 and departed this life December 15, 1858, aged 17 years 3 months and 28 days"
6. "In memory of Franata A., wife of James Steen. She was born April 6, 1828 and died July 1, 1860" (Phranata Ann Watts)
*There is particular historical significance to this cemetery; John H. Watts (above) was the father of the Governor of Alabama at the end of the Civil War, Thomas Hill Watts.
