Excerpts from the
1866 Butler Census Index
Submitted by Donna Eldridge
Season of Remembrance
"The years creep slowly by, Lorena, The snow is on the grass again... The sun's low down the sky, Lorena ... The frost gleams where the flow'rs have been."
So they sang, to the hundreds of Lorenas left behind when they marched away to fight for The Confederacy. Our fathers, husbands, sons, lovers left their homes in Butler County more than one hundred years ago. What happened to them. What homes were bereft?
The Census taken in 1866 identifies heads of households, other members; and in three columns for the dead and disabled allows those left behind to voice their sorrows, to hae their losses put into a book. There was a dignity to it, even though a piercing finality. Some might have resented this invasion of their private grief; but doubtlesss it helped many to name their dead.
Whatever reasons for the Census, and whatever the reactions of those enrolled, we are glad the Census was taken. The columns contain numbers, not names, and it is probably that many men were entered more than once - as a son by the parents, as a husband by the widow. Therein lies the challenge to those who care. Who came home? Who died far away? Who crept back to died at home?
"It matters little now, Lorena: The past is in th' eternal past. Our heads will soon lie low, Lorena. Life's tide is ebbing out so fast . . . There is a future, O thank God. Of life this is so small a part. 'Tis dust to dust beneath the sod; But there, up there, 'tis heart to heart."
