Back of every movement worth while for good there is found devout souls
with vision. Back in 1909, Rev. F. M. FLETCHER moved from Camden, Alabama,
to the community known as Pleasant Hill. This community is twelve miles
west of Georgiana and the line between Conecuh and Butler Counties runs
through the community. On reaching his new home, Rev. FLETCHER at once
began to talk and plan for a Baptist Church. In this undertaking he found
splendid cooperation by G. W. MIXON, J. E. GARNER, J. T. WRIGHT, and others,
who said, like the armor-bearer of Johnathan, "Do what is in thy heart
and I am with you."
On October 4, 1909, the Pleasant Hill Church was organized with the following members: Rev. and Mrs. F. M. FLETCHER, J. T. WRIGHT, J. E. GARNER, G. W. MIXON, Arthur CHANDLER, Sim WARD, Charley JONES, Mary MIXON, Mrs. G. A. CHANDLER, Ethel WRIGHT, Minnie WRIGHT, Mollie GARNER, Eunie JONES, Mary WARD, Frank SKIPPER, and Rachel SKIPPER. The presbytery in charge was Rev. F. M. FLETCHER, and C. M. MORGAN. F. M. FLETCHER was the first pastor, J. E. GARNER and J. T. WRIGHT were the first deacons, and G. W. MIXON was the first clerk. Since that time the following pastors have served: F. M. FLETCHER, A. C. SHELL, J. L. P. COOK, W. N. HUCKABEE, J. E. D. MATHES, J. T. PEAK, W. W. LEVERETT, H. S.McMILLIAN, J. B. BYRD, T. L. LEE, Ilus [ilus] HALFORD, Fred BROWN, J. W. JOYNER, WATSON, HARDGROVE, and the present pastor is Wilson SHELL. This church cooperates fully in all the work of the Association. The writer served as pastor of this church for eight years, and bears witness to the faithfulness of all the members, especially, G. W. MIXON. One of the last acts of his good life was to write a check for his tithe. Another to be memntioned is J. E. GARNER, who still lives and is now 94 years old. |
