Confederate Widow's Pension Application Records
for Sarah Ann Stuart,
widow of
Private Lewis Carnes Stuart,
Co. B, 17th Alabama Regiment

Submitted by Charles Stuart

The following records are excerpts from 14 pages of records of the Confederate Widow's Pension Application that my GG-Grandmother, Sarah Ann Stuart, filed in the early 1900s.  These records are in three groups from four specific dates;  May 4, 1907;  October 26, 1922;  November 23, 1922;  September 3, 1929.  I have included some notes about items I believe to be important.  With the exception of main titles, all information in bold print was written or typed in on each form as a response to a question, or a blank.  I have transcribed the responses exactly as written, making no effort to correct spelling or punctuation.

As Sarah A. Stuart's original Confederate Widow's Pension Application was approved on August 12, 1907, I can only assume that subsequent forms were required occasionally to update the State's records an re-verify her pensioner's status.

Names of other Butler County residents contained in these pages:  R. C. Lee, Justice of the Peace of Butler County;  D. B. Sellers;  J. H. Davis;  J. H. Griffin;  John Parker;  E. B. Rigsby, Justice of the Peace;  A. T. Kendrick, Tax Assessor;  John A. Kendrick and M. G. Hammonds, Board of Examiners, Butler County.

Your petitioner  S A Stuart  respectfully represents to your Honorable Board, that she is a citizen of  Butler  County, in the state of Alabama, and was such on the 1st day of January, 1899;  That she is the widow of  L C Stuart  who served as a  Private  in company  B  of the  17  regiment  Ala  volunteers;  That her husband was killed or died on the  6  day of  February  1887;  That he did not desert the service of the State of Alabama, nor of the Confederate States, that she has not since remarried , and she has no children upon whom she can depend for support, that all of her property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value, and that her annual income from all sources does not exceed four hundred dollars.  She therefore respectfully asks your Honorable Board to place her name upon the pension rolls of the State as a member of the fourth class, that she may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of the needy Confederate soldiers or sailors, and their widows, by an act of the General Assembly of Alabama, approved February 10th, 1899.

                                                                 Respectfully,
