The delegates led by E. T. Smyth moved that the Association be known as the Calhoun County Baptist Association. A drive through the grounds of one of the finest late nineteenth century churches in Alabama shows the Romanesque style of architecture designed by William Hulsey Wood, the architect of St. John the Divine in New York City. Features include hand-carved stonework by Simon Jewell, an imposing 95-foot bell tower housing twelve bells, a series of memorial windows, hand-carved interior trusses by Bavarian woodcarvers, and an Italian marble altar. The Parish Hall contains a set of lithographs showing the history of Christianity, said to be the only set of its kind in existence. First Presbyterian Church 1701 Henry Street Anniston, AL 36201 Phone: 256-435-6340 http://www.fpcanniston.org/ The First Presbyterian Church of Anniston was organized on March 9, 1884, with 27 members (21 adults & 6 children). General Daniel Tyler and Sam Noble, whose pig iron furnaces constituted the town’s basic industry, gave the church land at the corner of 10th and Quintard opposite Grace Church, then under construction. The outlook of those first Presbyterians was deeply influenced by the recent Civil War and its disastrous economic aftermath. Anniston had no public schools, libraries, hospitals, or paved streets. Carpetbag government in Alabama had ended only 10 years earlier, and Northern troops of occupation had been withdrawn from the state in 1876 (8 years earlier), so the little group that founded the church were Victorians, defeated Confederates, and pioneers struggling with hard times. Grace Episcopal Church 1000 Leighton Ave. Anniston Phone: 256-236-4457 http://www.graceanniston.org/ Grace Episcopal Church was founded by the same two families-those of Samuel Nobel and Daniel Tyler- who founded Anniston, Alabama. The church, which was completed in 1885, has been used by architectural text books as a model of perfect proportion and pure Gothic symmetry. Kingdom Nation Church 2017 W. 10th Street Anniston, AL 36202 Phone: 256-405-4337 Parker Memorial Baptist Church  1205 Quintard Avenue Anniston, AL 36201 Phone: 256-236-5628 http://www.parkermemorial.com/ Constructed of native stone between 1888 and 1891, this church is one of Anniston’s most prominent landmarks. Architect George Kennerly’s design features an interior of Italian wood and beautiful lancet stained glass windows. Early business leader Duncan T. Parker bequeathed a sum for the main auditorium in memory of his wife, Cornelia. The name was then changed from 12th Street Baptist Church to Parker Memorial. On July 3, 1887, forty-five believers, most of them members from First Baptist Church in West Anniston, organized the Second Baptist Church in the Opera House on Noble. One of the charter members, T.W. Ayers, became Southern Baptists' first medical missionary to China. Dr. G. A. Nunnally of Eufaula was called as pastor and property was purchased on the corner of Quintard and Twelfth Street. The name of the church was changed to Twelfth Street Baptist. Duncan C. Parker, 13 year old son of Duncan T. Parker, died March 26, 1889. Cornelia Parker, organist of Twelfth Street Baptist Church and wife of Mr. Parker, died three weeks later. As a memorial to his wife and son, Mr. Parker offered to pay for a new sanctuary. The church soon changed its name to Parker Memorial Baptist Church. Smith Metropolitan A.M.E.
