MONK posted by Keitha Kirk on Friday, July 10, 1998

I orginally posted this query in LA and TX. This family was in Calhoun Co., AL from 1850 to 1900. They were not here in 1910. Does anyone have any information on the following MONK family? I am looking for M(arquis) D. L. MONK, my gggrandfather. He was originally from Calhoun Co., AL. He was there in 1900 according to the 1900 census. I don't know if he moved to LA or not. I have part of a letter (dated 2-10-1963) addressed to my grandmother that mentions the name Goodfer. Goodfer was a son by M. D. L.'s 2nd wife, Louisenda (Lucinda). The letter also mentions Fred. Who is Fred?? It reads that Goodfer would know more because Fred would go with grandpa. Was Fred Goodfer's son and grandpa M. D. L.? Or was grandpa Goodfer? The letter has the address of Goodfer as C. G. MONK, Calhoun, LA Where is Calhoun, LA???? It also states that Fred was killed in a car wreck on Thanksgiving Day. I do not know who the letter is from, but at the top of the page it has an address: Route 3, Box 238; Atlanta, Texas. Goodfer had a younger sister by the name of Hattie. I am not sure as to whom the writer of the letter could be. They refer to a picture that "Mother marked an x on the throat of the one she thinks to be grandpa" According to the letter Fred would go with Grandpa to the old Soldiers Reunions. M. D. L. was in the CSA. Does anyone have any information on M. D. L. MONK (b. 6-1844), Louisenda MONK(b. 3-1866), Goodfer MONK(b. 5-1896), or Hattie MONK(b. 8-1897)? Thank you for your help.    http://members.aol.co m/kkirk6/genealogy.html

DODSON, HILL, HUTCHINSON, PETERS, POLLOCK, PORTER, RIDGEWAY posted by Lucy Barron on Monday, July 20, 1998

Seeking ancestry of my Bruton PETERS. He emigrated to Benton Co., AL before 1840 with his father-in-law Robert W. PORTER's family. Does anyone know of others who came with them. There was supposedly a gold rush in 1840 which caused many to come to Benton Co. but I do not know if my PETERS and PORTERs were among this group. He may have been the son of Capt. Bruton PETERS or Joseph PETERS [which??]. Both the latter were sons of William PETERS who was born ca 1760 in Craven Co., TN. William served in the Rev. War. and removed to eastern Tennessee (when?). This family's descendants can be found in Bledsoe, Rhea, Grainger, McMinn and Cumberland Co., TN. Joseph married Nancy HUTCHINSON and Bruton married a daughter of Abraham HILL. William is said to have married Henrietta RIDGEWAY, but I question this and ask for help here. Below are the *known* children of my Bruton PETERS. Bruton PETERS, b. ca. 1809 in TN; m. Margaret PORTER, daughter of Robert W. PORTER and Jane DODSON, ca 1831 in TN; d. ca 1865 in Burleson Co., TX. He was on the census of 1840 in Benton Co., AL. i. [ ? ]; b. circa 1832. He appeared on the census of 1840 in Benton Co., AL.
ii. Joseph; b. circa 1833 in TN. He appeared on the census of 1840 in Benton Co., AL. He appeared on the census of 1850 in Benton Co., AL; 1850 Benton Co., AL Census, p. 410 (Dist. 30). Did he go to Louisiana?

BENNETT, LANGLEY, RAPER, SMITH, WILLIAMS posted by Michael Lashley on Sunday, July 26, 1998

I am trying to help my grandmother locate info on her grandfather. Lou Mildred RAPER, born Oct. 10, 1922, in Dooly Co., Georgia. The daughter of Louis J. RAPER and Louella WILLIAMS. The Rapers had lived in Cave Springs, GA and Louis was stationed at the army base in Anniston. They met and married in Floyd Co., Ga in 1918. Then moved to south Georgia. Louella who was rasied using the last name, BENNETT was the daughter of Emily Lou SMITH and Jim WILLIAMS. No marriage record can be found for Emily or Jim but they lived in Calhoun Co., before they married. They were together for only a short time then separated. Hardly anything is known about Jim. The only and last time Louella ever saw her father was shortly after she married in 1918. Jim supposedly lived way atop Sand Mountain. He was still living then. He offered them some of his land to farm but Emily refused to allow it and so they never saw one another again. Emily later remarried William G. BENNETT and they had two daughters, Bell who married and Bessie who rmeained a spinster. Emily raised Louella as a BENNETT and on her mariage certificate it says BENNETT. After William died she was briefly married to James LANGLEY of Calhoun CO. She died in Calhoun Co and is buried at Goshen Cemetary. My grandmother, Mildred and I have tried desperately to find info on her grandfather Jim with no luck. If anyone can help please let me know.

WINGO posted by Mary Wingo Anderson on Tuesday, July 28, 1998

I am searching for information on the Willis See WINGO family. Willis was a Methodist preacher, born 1811 in Spartanburg Co. SC. He married Elizabeth ? abt 1822. Children: Thomas b. 1823; Alberry b. 1824; Peter b. 1826; William b. 1828; Mary Elizabeth b. 1832; Jasper b. 1834; Esther Ann b. 1836; Sarah b. 1838; John Fletcher b. 1841; Willis b. 1842; Rosy b. 1845; Benjamin Dunckin b. 1849. I found a reference in Benton (Calhoun) Co. to "Rev. Wingo" buying land and a ground breaking near Anniston - I believe in 1850s. I've since misplaced the note, so can't refer back to it. The family left the area after the Civil War (1867) and moved to Red River Co. TX where he continued as a Methodist Circuit rider until his death in 1871. They lost contact with older sons during Civil War, though I think at least one followed them on to TX. I'm told that there are many Wingos still in area - does anyone recognize an ancestor? Would love to know more about older brothers - whether they ever returned from the War, who they married. If you know anything about this family or the church mentioned in article, please write! We'll compare notes, I have a great of material on the Wingo family and will share.

CAHILL, GRIFFIN, KAHILL, TEAL posted by Patricia Camp-Mullis on Saturday, August 29, 1998

Searching for information regarding the John R. KAHILL family found in 1860 Calhoun County Census, pg #540. I would like any information that is available. My Grandfather John Jackson CAHILL was b 7/22/1871. His mother, Francis Elizabeth Teal CAHILL is found in the 1870 US Census for Dekalb Co,Al. living in the household with her sister, Rebecca Teal GRIFFIN and Rebecca's small one Will. This found on pg 878. On the same page are others of her family, mainly her mother, Frances TEAL and a brother, Zachariah TEAL. In the 1880 US Census, Francis Elizabeth CAHILL and her son, my grandfather, were living in Marshall Co.,AL. with another brother,Wm. J. J. TEAL and his family. I have accepted that my grandfather could have been illegimate, but why would Francis Elizabeth Teal CAHILL use the CAHILL name at census taken June 14, 1870 when John Jackson CAHILL wasn't born until July 22, 1871? There is a difference of 13 months there. My grandfathers death certificate lists Alee CAHILL as his father. Could he be either James A. M. KAHILL or the younger male, Elisha A. KAHILL listed in the Calhoun Co.,Al. 1860 Census? I have no parents, aunts, uncles or anyone else to help me solve this family question and hope there will be someone in Calhoun Co. who could help. Patricia Camp Mullis, Lakeland, Florida
