Migration from South Carolina. I've noticed that many of the 1850 and 1860 residents of Benton County (Calhoun) were from South Carolina. Is there some reason for this migration of South Carolina families to that part of Alabama? I've researched everything I can on line and can learn nothing about what brought so many from South Carolina during that time period. My BOGAN and PETTIT and POOLE families migrated from Spartanburg, SC to Benton County in late 1840s - 1850s. Carole in CA

Looking for parents and other information related to John Yoe buried in Oxford (City) Cemetery 1 June 1879. He was born in Jefferson County, Tennessee on 8 November 1820. Married to Elizabeth Jane Snow on 19 June 1849 in Oxford. He died at home, near Oxford, of typhoid pneumonia, Sunday, June 1st (1879), John Yoe, one of the first settlers of Calhoun. In the earliest recollection of the writer Mr. Yoe was a citizen of Jacksonville. Here he married and remained until he removed to his place near Oxford, which he has since occupied. With him passes away another one of the links that connects the earlier history of our county with the present. During life Mr. Yoe was regarded as a substantial citizen and good man, thoroughly reliable in all his financial transactions; and his death is a loss to the county and community in which he lived. His afflicted family have the deepest sympathy of many relatives and friends in this place. (Jacksonville Republican, Jacksonville, Alabama, 7 June 1879, page 3, column 1)

I am looking for information on the cemetery at 14th and Pine Ave. This was originally the cemetery for the First Baptist Church of Anniston and later the Pine Ave. Baptist Church. It is said that some of those buried in the cemetery were relocated in the moving of the various Baptist Churches that previously owned the property. Some of those buried there were John LOYD (LLOYD) 1816-1895, Thomas JOHNSON 1816-1890, Catherine JOHNSON 1824-1895, Clementine JOHNSON 1865- 1886 and infant daughter KING 1886. John Loyd [LLoyd] was a Confederate veteran and an Anniston City Councilman in the late 1800's. A farmer who owned what was much of downtown Anniston and also donated the land for the construction of the church and cemetery. Any info you can provide will be appreciated. Regards Bill Rozier

1850 Benton AL (Dist 28) census lists A ALEXANDER age 66, and (son?) W V ALEXANDER age 19. I suspect W V ALEXANDER is my great grandfather who served with the Cherokee General Stand Watie in the Civil War. W V ALEXANDER later married Chickasaw sisters, (1) Rebecca Colbert then (2) Jenny Lind Colbert. In 1874 he married my great grandmother, (3)Martha Elizabeth DAVIES (DAVIS) and had six children: Perry Davis ALEXANDER 1876, Tolbert Love ALEXANDER 1880, William Colonel ALEXANDER 1889, Robert E ALEXANDER 1891, Sheb ALEXANDER 1893, and the only daughter, Leslie ALEXANDER 1896. TOLBERT LOVE ALEXANDER, my grandfather, had one child, the only heir of W V ALEXANDER. W V Alexander ranched on Chickasaw lands east of present day Chickasha OK, and the town where he lived was named for him, present day Alex, OK. Please let me know if there are resources for the ALEXANDER family in Calhoun or Benton Counties AL. The family Bible shows WV was born 2/18/1833 in Borden Springs,AL, but some of the information in this bible is wrong, written long after the fact. Aunt Leslie wrote that her grandparents were Arthur ALEXANDER and Nancy DANFORTH. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
