55th Infantry Regiment, organized at Port Hudson, Louisiana, contained 900 veterans. It was formed by consolidating Norwood's 6th and Snodgrass' 16th Alabama Infantry Battalions. The men were from Madison, Cherokee, Calhoun, Jackson, and Marshall counties. Assigned to Buford's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, the unit saw action in the fight at Champion's Hill and in the trenches of Jackson . Later it was attached to General Scott's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and was active in the Atlanta Campaign and Hood's Tennessee operations. Ordered to North Carolina it fought its last battle at Bentonville. This regiment entered the Battle of Peach Tree Creek with 22 officers and 256 men, and lost 14 officers and 155 men killed and wounded. It surrendered with the army on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonel John Snodgrass, Lieutenant Colonels N.S. Graham and John H. Norwood, and Majors James B. Dickey and Joseph H. Jones.

This company formed at Goshen, Alabama, on January 13, 1862, and enrolled at Camp Johnson, Nashville, Tennessee, January 30, 1862. It later became Company "J" of the 55th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Companies "J" and "K" combined about September 1, 1863, to form new Company "K". Officers assigned came from this company. Survivors surrendered with Company "C" of the consolidated 27th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Gilbert, who being duly sworn, deposeth and saith that when a Private in Company "K" of 55th Regiment of Ala Infantry and while in discharge of his duty on the____ day of ____ 1864, Kingston in the State of North Carolina was wounded in the top of the head, fracturing the skull, causing great trouble especially during the winter, can not stoop without great inconvenience and pain and in consequence of which disability or infirmity, wound or wounds, he has been rendered physically incapable of making a livlihood by labor; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 13th day of February, 1891, and is a resident at the date of his application; that he is engaged in the business of farming and light jobs that his taxable property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value, and that his Salary and Gross Income does not amount to four hundred dollars per year.

That his taxable property consists of 40 acres land, and is not worth in the aggregate more than five hundred dollars; That his Salary or Gross Income does not amount to five hundred dollars per year; and that his wife does not own a separate estate of more than five hundred dollars; And he hereby makes application for relief under said Act.

THE STATE OF ALABAMA,
Cherokee County,

To the Honorable Board of Pension Examiners for said County;

Your petitioner, Richard G. Gilbert, respectfully represents to your honorable board that he is a resident citizen of Cherokee County, in the State of Alabama, and that he resided in said State on the first day of January in the year 1899. That he enlisted in the Service of the State, or Confederate States, as a private in Company K in the 55th Ala Regiment on the ____ day of Jan 1861 at Goshen Valley in the State of Alabama, and that he was honorably discharged from such service on the ____ day April 1865, that he did not desert the service of the Confederate States, or the State of Alabama. That he was wounded at the battle of Shiloh in the State of Miss. That he is now unable to make a living by manual labor on account of wounds, a rupture and age; that he is at the time of filing this application 61 years of age, and that his post office address is Mona Alabama; That he does not own property either in his own name, nor that his wife, to the value of four hundred ($400) dollars; that his annual income does not exceed four hundred ($400) dollars, and that he has no children upon whom he can depend for support. Your petitioner files herewith a complete schedule of all property owned by himself and wife. In consideration of the foregoing facts, your petitioner asks that his name be placed upon the pension rolls, in the class that your honorable board may adjudge him to belong, that he may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of Confederate and Alabama soldiers and their widows, by act of the General Assembly approved February 10, 1899.

Your petitioner, Mary Gilbert respectfully represents to your Honorable Board, that she is a citizen of Cherokee County, in the State of Alabama, and was such on the 1st day of January, 1899; that she is the widow of R. G. Gilbert, whose name is now on the Pension Roll of pensioners from Cherokee County; that her husband died on the 23rd day of June 1906; that she has not since remarried; and that she has no children upon whom she can depend for support; that all of her property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value; and that her annual income from all sources does not exceed four hundred dollars. She therefore respectfully asks Your Honorable Board to place her name upon the Pension Rolls of the State as member of the fourth class, that she may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of needy Confederate soldiers and sailors and their widows, by an Act of the General Assembly of Alabama, approved February 10th, 1899, and amended March 5th, 1901, and she files herewith a complete inventory of all property, both real and personal , that she owns.
