Warlock/Providence Baptist Church Register

Choctaw County, Alabama

1836 - 1879

An edited typed transcription from microfilm from Baptist Church Records, Nashville, TN, was presented to the Choctaw County Public Library by James M. Steinwinder of Gautier, Mississippi in 1995. Transcription was by Carolyn Pearson Franklin.

I BELIEVE THE NAME TRANSCRIBED AS N. HAY SHOULD BE NATHAN SLAY. It is easy to misread handwritten names, and Slay would look like Hay. Nathan Slay was an organizer of early Baptist churches in the area.

It is stated that the church was constituted in 1836, which makes these minutes one of the earliest records of names in the Butler, Choctaw County, Alabama area.

Providence Church near Warlock/Wahalak creek was located about two miles NW of the present Butler, in a community called BERRIEN on an 1842 map. Although the church is disbanded and the building is gone, the cemetery on Sandy Cut Road is still used.

The names listed here are included in the minutes. Some were members, some were in disputes with members, some were censured or excommunicated for profanity, adultery, not keeping the Sabbath (by fishing), intoxication, gambling, and rolling in the alley. One member admitted rolling balls in the alley (bowling?) but denied it was improper conduct for a Baptist. In all cases the church sent a committee of three members to consult the person accused, and ask him/her to attend a meeting to give his version of what happened. Always the church sought peace, fellowship and the brotherhood of the church!

These men served as Moderators or clerks or clerk pro tem: Jesse W. Bird, J. E. Scott, N. Hay (Slay), Lemuel Calloway, W. Millburn, Bro. Steinwinder, William Woodward, J. C. Macon.

1840 delegates to the Bethel? Association meeting: Francis Landry, W. L. Norman, J. E. Scott, and J. E. Steinwinder.

Slaves are listed as members in 1837 and no longer listed in 1879.

In 1849 an arm of the church was established in Tishlarka. Tishlarka Creek is North of Ararat. Bogalusa and Womack Old Field are mentioned in the minutes.

Bro. James Luker attached himself to the "Methodist Society"in 1852.

    J. Gough confessed that he rolled a few balls through the alley without it being improper conduct.

Willis Hurst excluded for intoxication in December 1861.

    Bro. W. L. Norman, deceased, 1842 list.

Nancy Thompson, was Nancy Edwards, became an Episcopalian in 1860.

Bro. William Campbell was licensed by Providence Church: "On motion Br. Campbell was liberated to exercise in any public way within the bounds of the Association and out of it when he has a witness with him." (January 1849 Minutes)

The church had motions to considered ordaining him several times in the following years. Requests for Campbell's ordination came from Harmony Church in 1852 and Black Creek Church in 1853. It was not until June 1853 that the church acted: "Upon motion it was resolved unanimously that Br. Campbell be set apart for the ministry. Resolved that a presbytery be called and that the ordination take place on a Sabbath morning of our next meeting and the Presbytry consist of Bro. N. Hay (Nathan Slay), Scott, Daughty and Ghigren(Cliett?)"

The Minutes of the Mount Sterling Baptist Church list him as its first Minister in 1850. He also served these Baptist Churches: Black Creek (Bogueloosa?), Bladon Springs, Center Ridge (Nicholson's Store) and others.

Letters of dismission called for and granted in 1850:

Elizabeth Bush, Claborn and Elizabeth Collins, Joseph & Martha McLane, Nancy Pearce, Harriet Pickett, Sarah Sikes, Elizabeth Sikes, Susana F. Steinwinder, Adeline Wilson, William Wilson

1851: Mary Denmark, Elizabeth Ober, William & Hanor Hay(Slay?), Belfast, Bennett & Hector Underwood, and Jackson & Elizabeth Wilson.

1855: Martha H., Ellen, Elizabeth Campbell and Ariana James

    1871: John Campbell
