AUSTIN QUERY FOR COLBERT and LAWRENCE CO, AL
From Helen Austin, AustinART@aol.com
John Harvey AUSTIN b 29 Apr 1876 Falkville, Morgan, AL mar 1899 Mt. Springs,
Lawrence Co, AL; removed to Old Brick Presbyterian Church area, west of the Town
Creek about 1917 after it had become part of COLBERT co. AL. Many of his
family are bur at that church and John h d 11 Sep 1957 in Colbert at his farm.
His brother, Isaac Samuel AUSTIN b Jul 1867 Morgan Co, AL, d 1 Jul 1947 AL, and was bur 1947 Shiloh, Franklin Co, AL. He lived for a time at Leighton, Colbert Co, AL, not far from his brother.
There were many AUSTIN, ASTON, ASTIN settlers in the Brick community from before 1820. Does anyone know if the Matthew A. ASTON b 1847 and wife, Clara O'NEAL, who are bur in Old Brick Cem, are connected to the John C. AUSTIN b 1831 TN d 1907 Lawrence, AL who was the father of the John Harvey and Sam mentioned above ? I do know that Matthew was the son of Alexander L. AUSTIN who was probably a son of either, John, James, or William of the 1820 census of Lawrence Co, AL.
These early Austins were related to the Alexander Ginges AUSTIN of Lawrence Co, AL and formerly of Spartanburg, SC who was a Rev War Vet. His only son reported in his pension record and will, was James , a schoolteacher. This researcher believes that the other James and John, and perhaps the elder William on the early census were younger brothers of Alexander. I list below the data from the 1830 and 1850 census for Lawrence Co. The Aston (spelling) families including Alexander L. and Matthew A. were in that section of Lawrence that became part of Colbert County in 1895.
The spelling for all these individuals seems to vary from AUSTIN, ASTON, to ASTIN.

were somehow orphaned and adopted by a Holman family. Frank and Henry had
brothers named Manuel, Andrew and Ed, also had two sisters, one of which married
a Stanfield. They seem to be quite illusive. They lived in "the hills" close to

ASBELL and wife, Margaret Louisa ABLE, son, Joseph M. ASBELL and son, George W.
ASBELL, started for Texas between 1865 and 1870 travelling from South
Carolina/Georgia line to Alabama. It is said that they stopped in Cherokee,
Alabama where George W. ASBELL was shot and killed. They may have stopped there
to visit relatives. James E. ASBELL and wife, Margaret Louisa ABLE, Joseph M.
ASBELL continued on to Texas, arriving around 1870. It is not known if Ezekiel
ASBELL and wife, Ala, remained in Cherokee, Alabama or not although notes of
Lula Asbell Waldrup say that they did and lived the remainder of their lives
there. Living in the County of Franklin, Alabama in 1860 was a George W.
BRANSCOMB who was the brother of Mahala “Ala” BRANSCOMB ASBELL, wife of Ezekiel
ASBELL. The area where George BRANSCOMB lived became part of Colbert County when

Martha King was the daughter of James m and margaret (Hulsey) King, b abt 1864.
About 1878 the family went to Baxter Co, AR, and when james M died in 1886
Martha Beck was living in Baxter Co, but Martha apparently returned to Colber/
Franklin Co before 1900. In Mar 1980, Eva foster writes, "Aunt Martha was
married two or three times. There was a daughter named Ann (who was grown and
married to a Scott.) Then Aunt Martha's second husband was a Finch. there was a
boy born to this union and Aunt Sally Pierce loved him dearly. After Uncle Reese
passed away, Aunt Sally and her nephew Dewey Finch lived several months with us
on our farmT then my dad, Pink Gargis, took the two of them back to
Russellville" Using this information, I was able to find the following: in 1900
Franklin Co, AL, E D 21, Sheet 9, Line 152: Francis Finch b May 1848, GA SC SC
farmer. Married 10 years Martha D
Mar 1866 AL AL AL mother of 4 children, 3 living, Martin L
Aug 1892 AR GA AL So, did Martha and Francis marry in Arkansas? Or was Martin
actually born in AL? In the same census, E D 18 Seet 8 Line 129, Reece Pierce b
Jun 1853AL TN TN track foreman in mines, married 25 years, wife Sarah b Aug 1863
no children, Alberta? Beck, adopted child b Jan 1885 AR PA AL. This would appear
to be Martha's Beck child. At this point, we are missing one of the three
children of Martha's who were living in 1900. In another letter, Eva Foster says
that Ann Beck married a Scott and lived in or near Scottsboro in Jackson County,
Alabama. "I have the idea that Mr Scott worked for the railroad. I was about ten
or twelve years old when this Ann Beck Scott came to Russellville to visit her
mother, my Aunt Martha. .....I do not know why Dewey Finch lived with Aunt Sally
and Uncle Reese Pierce later, but somehow, some time after we moved from
Russellville back to our farm in Dec 1912, Aunt Sally and Dewey came to live in
our home, uncle Reece had died. They stayed for several months. (I was a
teen-ager, at the time, probably 18 or 19 years old.)"Note: Eva Foster was the
daughter of Pink Gargis. Her grandmother was Eliza King, sister of Martha. Is
anyone looking for these children of Martha King Beck Finch?

WHO IS CATHARINE DOSS?
In his will, made in
1881, Henry Gargis leaves land to Cartharine Gargis. “It is my will and I
require my executors to Deed to the woman that has lived so long in my family
and is known as Catherine Gargis and the wife of the late R I Doss, Fifty acres
of land and by the numbers as follows: S e 1/4 of SE 1/4 and 10 acres off the
East side SW 1/4 of the same 1/4 section 22, Township 5 Range 10 West the same
being the place her father lived upon before he left the country.”
This I assume to be the
Catharine from the 1880 census: “On page 501, Henry age 63, Nancy age 64,
Catherine age 28 a servant, and Robert age 15 laborer “ So this Catherine was
born about 1852. Henry says she is known as Catharine Gargis and so it appears
from the 1880 census. So why is she not known as Catharine Doss? If she was the
wife of R I Doss? Had she also been married to a Gargis? Is Robert age 15 at all
involved in this?
The land Henry described
appears to me to have been patented by Benjamin King in 1858. That Benjamin was
declared “non compos mentos” and his brother Martin became his guardian--this
about 1871. I haven’t been able to determine if this Benjamin was married to
anyone or not. I think I noticed where Benjamin’s land was sold, to be used for
his support.
I have mostly followed
only the family of Henry Gargis. There were other Gargises in the area, but it
seemed a bit daunting to try and sort all them without the help of a family
members. I did notice a William Gargis b 1811 TN and wife Susan in the 1870
census. Was this perhaps a brother of Henry’s? He had a Catharine b 1850 in his
household. Note that I haven’t investigated this Henry further.
Eva Foster has a family story in which she describes Catharine Doss as a friend
of her Mother and Father. Her parents were Pink Gargis and Mary Britnell. Eva
was born 1897. So Catharine was a round for a while.
The main reason I have
been interested in this is that in one of the first letters I received regarding
general Hulsey research, Bill C Hulsey told me that he had once hired a
professional researcher to try and find out the wife of Buford Hulsey, and the
researcher suggested that her father might have been a Doss. Bill could never
get this professional to suggest a source for this information and concluded
he’d been taken. But then this name Doss crops up, associated with Gargises in
Franklin/Colbert Co.
Bill said that when he started to do genealogy, his parents had both died, but
his oldest living aunt sat down to tell him about his ancestors. The oldest
known to her was Buford Hulsey who married a Gargus in Florence, Alabama. Later
he learned that her first name was Lucinda, and she was b 1818 in TN. This would
be consistent with the family of William Gargis, the father of Henry Gargis who
married into my King family, also connected to the Hulseys by marriage.
Another interesting
tidbit from Eva Foster is that Catharine Doss had a sister, Jane Pennington.
Jane had two grandchildren, “the little girl, Paralee Pennington, was about
my (eva’s) age or perhaps a bit older. Her brother was some younger. When we
were p[icking cotton, paralee would say, “Aunt Catherine, Aunt Catherine, I’m so
cold” so many times.” Since there are Pennington connections with some branches
of the family, have always thought this interesting.
Sure would like to
hear from anyone who has knowledge of these people.
