MT. ZION NEWS. [The West Colbert News, Cherokee, Friday, 4 June 1915, p. 4]

Dear Editor:‑‑‑‑Thought I would write a short letter to our new paper. We sure are
     proud we are going to have a new paper published in our little town of Cherokee.
The farmers in this community are progressing nicely with their crops. All would
     be glad to see a nice rain.
Miss Esther Lee Hill has been very ill for the past three weeks, but we are glad
     to report her improving at this writing.
Dr. Auburn Burns and Miss Bessie Denton were married last Sunday.
The guests at Mr. J. A. Denton’s today are Bob Denton and family, S. L. Williams
     and family, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Burns, Miss Mattie Esther Hamilton,
     Mr. Estes Williams and Carol Denton. We are having a large time robbing bees.
Mr. Estes Williams went to Rock Creek fishing one day last week.
     He caught twenty-three fish.
Mr. T. R. Burns and son John spent Friday night at Mr. Whit Hamilton’s.
Mr. Leo Hamilton and sister, Ola, spent the day at Mrs. C. H. Williamson’s
     last Sunday.
Mr. J. D. Stinger died May 13th. Mr. Stringer was the oldest man in our
     community, being 80 year’s old.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hamilton visited her father, Mr. T. R. Burns, at Maud,
     last Saturday and Sunday.
Well, as this is our first letter to your paper, will not write any more.

We had a fine rain Sunday.
Mr. Auburn and Bessie Burns were welcome visitors at Mr. J. E. Denton’s
     the latter part of the week.
Mr. J. C. Denton and family were visiting J. A. Denton Saturday night.
Mr. C. H. Williams and family, Misses Mabel Paden, Nora Hamilton and
     Corroll Denton all went to Rock Creek to preaching Sunday. They returned
     home through the rain.
I guess most of the peas will be planted this week for a hay crop. Well as
     news is scarce and the peas must be planted I will ring off for the present.

Mr. Judson Hargett, our little school teacher, visited home folks Saturday and Sunday.
Master Dewey Denton was the guest of Miss Ruth Bryan Sunday.
Miss Arvella Williams was visiting Miss Ida and Nora Hamilton Tuesday.
A crowd of the Mt. Zion people were present at the McCaig and Blanton Picnic
     Saturday. All reported a nice time.
Mr. Judson Hargett began his school at Mt. Zion last Monday. We hope his great success. He is staying at Mr. W. N. Hamilton’s.
Mrs. Whit Hamilton is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Burns, of Maud, Ala.
Mr. Walter Denton was a pleasant visitor at Zion school Monday and Tuesday.
     Wonder when he will call again.
We are expecting a grand spelling bee with Mynot school before the close
     of our school.
Mr. Whit Hamilton is spending this week with his parents while Mattie is gone.

Health in this county is very good. All the farmers are done laying by and
     it seems they are all wearing a smile.
Mr. Judson Hargett attended the Teachers’ Institute at Sheffield last week.
Mrs. Mary Hamm has returned home after a visit to her parents at
      Martin’s Mills, Tenn.
Mr. Dewey Denton spent Thursday night with Riley Pounders.
The meeting started at Mt. Zion Sunday. There was a large crowd present.

Our meeting closed Thursday night. We did not have any conversions.
Miss Ruth Byars was a pleasant visitor at Mattie Hamilton’s Wednesday.
Miss Nannie burns was the guest of Ola and Nora Hamilton Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Argie McCaig were pleasant visitors at Mr. W. M.
     Hamilton's Wednesday.
