BENGE

Does anyone have any information with respect to how Benjis Creek on Sand Mountain got its name. I have heard the story that a Cherokee family hid out on the Creek during the Indian removal, but have no additional information or documentation. I have also heard the name "Polly" Benge mentioned but have no idea if she might relate to this family. I would just like to know if there is any substance to this story. Also, my dad first farmed on land on Sand Moutain which was said to have indians buried. My dad was told to plow around these areas which were marked with stones. One of the "Alabama" band boys leased the land several years ago and it is my understanding that the stones have been removed, but don't know if this is true or not. From: Alfred C. STEWART

I have just uncovered the possibility that my g-g-greatgrandmother Mary Stewart was a Cherokee who learned to write under the teachings of Sequoyah. She is found in the 1850 Dekalb County, Alabama Census living in Dugout Valley (between Fort Payne and Sylvania on Sand Mountain). According to the late Charlie Scott, a prominent Fort Payne attorney, he grew up in Chavies with Mary's greatgrandson whose last name was Stewart. All I know about him is that his grandfather was Robert Stewart and his father was a John Stewart and his mother was a Robinson or perhaps Robertson. According to Charlie(b. ca. 1880-1970) his childhood friend was put in an Indian school by a Bob Poe who is most likely a relative. I need to know this Stewart's name so I can look him up in available Indian records. Thank you. From: Alfred C. Ellis 30 Dec 1997
