Barkley, Route 1, Fort Payne. The citation reads: "For heroic service in connection with military operations against the enemy on April 20, 1945. Private First Class Barkley was at his gun in a coordinated attack against strong enemy held positions on ....................... When the ridge had been reached, Private First Class Barkley immediately pushed forward to the front and placed his gun in position to protect against a possible counterattack. Private First Class Barkley was firing at a pillbox which was pinning down our men when he was hit by an enemy mortar shell and instantly killed. Private First Class Barkley always gave close support to his comrades in the attacking platoons. His courage, aggressiveness and determination enabled us to hold our positions and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service." ------------------------- The Fort Payne Journal Fort Payne, Alabama Wednesday, February 9, 1949 Page 1 PFC. CARL D. BARKLEY The remains of Pfc. Carl D. Barkley, 29, son of George W. Barkley, arrived in Fort Payne Tuesday for burial. Carl was a well known fellow around Fort Payne and DeKalb County, having worked on various jobs. He enlisted in February, 1942 into the armed forces and spent some 14 months in Europe where he was wounded and returned to the U.S. for hospitalization. following his recovery he was sent to the Pacific Theatre where he was killed in action on April 20, 1945. He is survived by his father, George W. Barkley; six brothers, Julius, of Mentone; Claude, Raymond and Emanuel, of Adamsburg; William, of Round Mountain, and Wesley, of Rising Fawn, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Lorene Walker, of Adamsburg, Mrs. Katherine Lawless, Jamestown and Mrs. Lillian Maples, of Adairesville, Ga., and other relatives. Funeral services were held this (Wed.) afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Adamsburg with Rev. Floyd Crowe officiating. Burial was in Adamsburg cemetery with McBryar Funeral Home in charge.
