WILLIAM L. BEATY Three sad and lonely years have passed Since our great sorrow fell; The shock that we received that evening, We still remember well. Friends may think I have forgotten, when at times they see me smile; Little do they know the heartache That one smile hides all the while. No one knows the silent heartache, Only those who have lost can tell Of the grief that's borne in silence For the one I loved so well. Days of sadness still comes o'er me, Secret tears do often flow, But memory keeps him ever near me, The one at rest whom I love so. He was taken from us so suddenly, Why, we shall never know; Our hearts are still torn and bleeding, Our darling! We miss you so. Many tears I shed alone For my boy who will not be coming home, But he is now in Heaven, Never more to roam. Although dear son, You have gone, Still sweet memories Linger on. His place in our home is vacant, Which no one can ever fill, His body lies in France, So cold and so still. -By his mother.
