George Lee Gilbreath, who was killed in action in Belgium, December 25, 1944, were returned to Fort Payne, Wednesday, April 28, 1943. the photo shows the remains being removed from the train upon its arrival Wednesday night. George Lee Gilbreath was the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Gilbreath of Chavies. His boyhood days were spent in and around Chavies. George Lee was well known and one of the best loved young men of DeKalb County, where he worked at various jobs. He was probably best known and will be longest remembered for his singing. Those who heard him sing never forgot him. For a number of years he sang with the Thrift Quartet. In April, 1944, he was inducted in the armed forces and received his basic training at Fort McClellan. He went overseas in September of the same year he entered the service. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was of the Missionary Baptist faith. He was married to Miss Herchellene Peek, August 6, 1944. Left to mourn his passing are his mother, Mrs. Lillie Gilbreath, Chavies; two brothers. Wallace and Buford Gilbreath; three sisters, Mrs. Dennie Green, Mrs. Hester Stephens, both of Chavies, and Mrs. Della Chitwood, Fort Payne, Rt. 3; 15 nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at Mr. Herman with Rev. Ed Graves and Rev. Kyle Durham officiating. Burial was in Mt. Herman cemetery with McBryar Funeral Home in charge.
