The devastating loss of the Fayette County courthouse soon after the Civil War destroyed a wealth of information and left a smoldering heap of unanswered questions. More than 40 years of history vanished in a matter of minutes. Fortunately, most of the records survived yet another courthouse fire in the early 1900s.
