GURLEY • WHITSON • RAY • ROGERS • STRICKLAND • KELLY |
Leah Ray Swindle ~ Jul 14 2000
I am looking for any information on the following: My great grandmother
Etta Cassie GURLEY, born 1878-died 1919 in the Spanish Flu Epidemic,
buried along with her husband John Marion WHITSON, born 1874-died
1962 in the New River Church of Christ Cemetary outside of Fayette, Fayette
County. I have a lot of information on the Whitsons, but none on
the Gurley side, and no one to ask. Her sister Beulah was married
to John Whitson's brother Jason. Beulah also died in the same epidemic
about a week after Cassie. I have always wanted to know more about
them, and about my father's RAY side of the family. I show his ggggfather
Solomon RAY to be married to a Samantha ? and their son Silas Benjamin
Ray married Claudace/Candice Martin, who died childless, and then he married
Jaley Frances Rogers. They had Silas Jr, who married Annie
Mae STRICKLAND, daughter of Francis Marion Strickland and Minerva
KELLEY. They had my grandfather Johnnie Eugene Ray.
Silas and his son Silas were both drowned July 2, 1949 in Lock 17 Warrior
River. Johnnie Ray married Mattie Delora Whitson, and they had my
father, Norman Herbert Ray, who was born, I believe in Berry or Corona,
and I haven't had a lot of contact with my father's side of the family
in order to ask any questions about these people before it was too late.
Please help. Thanks.
