In furthering the research for SAMUEL STUDDARD formerly of
Laurens Co.,
SC, and 1850-1880 census in Fayette Co., AL, the following is provided
on
his first wife:
MALTA GORDON was
married to SAMUEL STUDDARD on 09 Jan 1811, Laurens
Co.,
SC. (His application for a pension for War of 1812 service
referred to
her as "MARTHA" although early court records show her as MALTA.
SAMUEL STUDDARD was illiterate and the information was recorded by
others, probably unfamiliar with the name "MALTA" and thought
he was saying "MARTHA" or, perhaps he preferred to call her
"MARTHA."
Parents: ADAM GORDON and MARY RICHEY.
They married before deed record
of 13 Dec 1787 where he sold her land grant that was issued to her in
her
own name after coming to America. ADAM GORDON was born about
1760,
possibly Granville Co., NC, where he owned land before moving to
Laurens
Co., SC. He died about 1803 in Laurens Co., SC.
Maternal Grandparents:
MARY RICHEY, born abt. 1760, "Scotch-Irish", from Northern
Ireland. She came to America with her parents and siblings,
sailing
from
the port of Larne on ship, "James and Mary," a 200 ton ship, as
part of a group of five shiploads of Presbyterian settlers headed by
the
Rev. William Martin. Their ship was the first one to leave, on 25
Aug
1772. The ship's Master was John Workman. Unfortunately they
encountered smallpox on board and had to wait on Sullivan's Island
for a few weeks until the disease had run its course. All
individuals
(except for wives) over 13 were provided 100 acre land grants and their
land grants were recorded in the SC Journals.
Her father JOHN RICHEY, SR. received 250 acres. (Plat Book 20).
This
consisted of 100 acres for himself; 50 acres for his wife, MARGARET,
and
50 acres each for the two children under 13 (ROBERT and MARTAH (another
spelling for Martha). Two older children, MARY, JOHN, Jr. and
ELEANOR
RICHEY were over 13 and received their own grant.
A few years later, JOHN RICHEY, SR. died and left a will in Laurens
Co.,
SC, dated 29 Jun 1778, naming his wife and five children.
1. JOHN RICHEY, JR. married MARGARET McCLURE (Some descendents
in
Pickens Co., AL, in 1850).
2. MARY RICHEY married ADAM GORDON. He died intestate about 1803. In
1821, MARY RICHEY GORDON and her children were sued by George
Abernathy,
Case No. 20, in the short Washington Equity Court, serving Laurens,
Newberry, and Greenville Counties, and was one of the few cases held in
that court). All children and the daughter's spouses were part of
the lawsuit.
3. ELEANOR RICHEY married DAVID McCLURE (brother of MARGARET McCLURE)
4. ROBERT RICHEY
5. MARTAH RICHEY
The children of ADAM GORDON and MARY RICHEY, named in lawsuit:
1. POLLY GORDON, (nickname for MARY), b. abt. 1786 (Married to ANDREW
STUDDARD)
2. NELLIE GORDON (often nickname for ELEANOR) (Married JOSEPH BURNS).
3. MALTA GORDON, b. abt. 1793 (Married to SAMUEL STUDDARD, brother to
ANDREW STUDDARD)
4. JAMES GORDON (No testimony - had moved outside court's
Jurisdiction)
5. JOHN GORDON (No testimony - had moved outside court's
Jurisdiction).
It is believed they also had a son, NATHANIEL GORDON who died young. I am descended from SAMUEL and MALTA GORDON STUDDARD's son, JAMES STUDDARD and his first wife, ELIZABETH HENDON via their daughter, MARTHA ANN STUDDARD and husband WILLIAM J.F. STRICKLAND.

My GGGgrandparents were William H.
WRIGHT and Elizabeth
C. POE. In the
1860 Fayette Co., AL census, a
presumably widowed Elizabeth is living with her 4 children: William D.
age 11, James M. age 8, Mahala J. age 6, and Rebecca A. age 4.
They are
enumerated next to a Stephen N. (or W.) POE and family.
I am not 100% certain that this family was actually part of the Fayette
Co. Wrights or Poes, but it seems likely that they were. I cannot
locate them conclusively in 1850.
William Daniel WRIGHT married America Jane WEST in Fayette Co., AL in
1873. This couple subsequently moved to Winston Co, MS.
Elizabeth C. POE WRIGHT and her 2 daughters also moved to MS in the
1870's, first to Oktibbeha Co. and then to Winston Co, MS. Both
daughters married in MS.
Elizabeth C. POE WRIGHT was born 25 Mar 1829 in AL and died 17 Oct 1910
in Winston Co, MS. She, her son William Daniel WRIGHT (my
GGgrandfather) and his wife, and her daughters Rebecca A. (married Joe
SHAW) and Mahala Jane
(married Thomas A. McCOOL)
are all buried in
Murphy
Creek cemetery in Winston Co., MS.
I have never located my William H. Wright conclusively in any census;
his
name and his wife's maiden name were gleaned from the death
certificates of three of their children. He may or may not be the
same
William H. Wright who purchased land in Fayette Co, AL in 1848.
He may
or may not be related to the Wrights there (same goes for my Elizabeth
Poe).
Just figured I'd post to see if anyone out there has already
"claimed" these two. The Wrights and Poes of Fayette Co seem
to be so numerous to me as to be an almost insurmountable obstacle,
just
starting out on them!
I welcome any info and will share anything I have.

I have found my great grandfather,
Moses C. JOHNSON in
Fayette County in 1862. At this time he was 20
years
old and had joined the 41st. Alabama Infantry as a private in Company
B. In further checking the census reports, I have found a Moses
JOHNSON,
who is the same age, living with the Lemmuel JOHNSON family in
1860. I
am
hoping that this must be him. As I am a novice at this I was
wondering
if
anyone could point me in the right direction for proving that they are
the same. Thanks for your help.

Afraid I didn't push the right button when
I 1st tried to submit my query about origins of "Fannie" Jane
PETERS, m. according
to her Confed. pension papers (dated Feb. 1905,
Chickasaw Co., Miss.) to Michael WALTERS FREEMAN May 15, 1865,
Tuscaloosa, Ala. Older family members trying to recreate the
sound of
her
real first name from their memory of the way Gr-Uncle William BROOKS
FREEMAN said it had the sound something like "Feriah". MWF was
s/o William and Delilah WALTERS FREEMAN of Fayette Co., Ala., who came
there prior to MWF's birth in 1841. "Fannie Jane's"
birth year is from 1847-1849 Ala. I have seen her parents' birth
states as "TENN." Who tho were her PETERSes? Seeing a bio
online of a Robert FRIERSON PETERS from Fayette yesterday gave me the
idea perhaps he was of her (extended?) family. Can anyone
help? I toy
with the idea that her true first name might have been more like
"FRIERY" or "Phriara" from "FRIERSON."

Hi,
I am researching the Wright family. I have read that Joseph Wright of
Fayette Co., Al. moved to east Texas with his wife and sons James J.,
William P., Richard Razzy, Jessie H., and Thomas Poe Wright. I
descend
from William Pleasant Wright whose family had a farm in Polk Co., Tx.
between Livingston and Moscow. William Pleasant called "Plez"
had brothers named Jessie and Tom, and he named his own son Razzy Boyd
Wright. I believe this is the same family, if anyone has any info
please
respond. I would like to exchange info.
