SPRINGER  •  GLOVER

Karla Calhoun Mon Mar 2 10:13:44 2009
Seeking info on the Joseph SPRINGER family who is listed in Fayette Co. AL on the 1880 census in the Collins' district.  Also a GLOVER family living next door.  They later moved to Hardin/McNairy cos of TN, but at least one descendant remained in Fayette Co, William Russell Springer.  He is a resident there on his WWI draft registration.  He also shows up on 1920 census with his family there.  Did Joseph Springer die there in Fayette Co before the rest moved to TN?  Where is he buried.  His widow reportedly died and is buried in Hardin Co. TN.  ~ Thanks, Karla

HODGES  •  (ERWIN?)

Jeff Hodges Sun Mar 8 17:32:29 2009
I am researching the HODGES family of Fayette County, Alabama.  My HODGES ancestors lived in Northern Fayette County near the Marion County line in the Bobo community a few miles south of the city of Winfield (in neighboring Marion County).  I am searching for any information about the ancestors and origins (parents, grandparents, etc.) of my great great grandparents.  I have very little info. about my HODGES family/ancestors/ethnic origins, etc. and I have not been sucessful in finding any other information about this family other that what I have found in the 1860 census of Fayette County:

HODGES, J.C. (John Carter?), January 6, 1809-March 28, 1864 - My great great grandfather
HODGES, Jane (June?) (maiden name may be Erwin), ??, 1814-November 24, 1884 - My great great grandmother
HODGES, Stephen (Joseph Stephen) - my great grandfather
HODGES, William
HODGES, Allmoth (Allmuth?, Alma?) (name may be misspelled on census)
HODGES, Jesse

The 1860 census states that J.C (John Carter) HODGES & wife Jane were both born in South Carolina - what county or town/community I do not know nor if they lived in other states before coming to Alabama or if they lived elsewhere in the state before settling in Fayette County and do not know how long they resided in Fayette County prior to the 1860 census.  All of their children were likely born in Alabama.  I have no info. as to who John & Jane's parents, grandparents, ancestors, etc. were.

These people lived and died in the same area in which the settled in Fayette County.  These people are buried in the old HODGES family cemetery in the area where they lived and many of their descendants are buried in nearby Musgrove Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.  I will appreciate it if anyone who has any info. that might help me in my research.  I am especially interested in finding out where in South Carolina my great great grandparents came from and their ancestors before them.  Also interested in knowing if the town of Hodges in Franklin County, Alabama and the city of Hodges in Greenwood County, South Carolina have any connections to my family.  Again, any help in my research on the HODGES family will be truely appreciated.

DAVIS  •  KIDD  •  BARTON

Kay Davis Wojack Sat Apr 4 18:24:57 2009
According to our family history, the original DAVIS settler to this country came from Wales to Camden County, SC before the Revolution.  His grandson moved to Fayette Co, Al about 1820.  Our problem is that we have no idea of their given names.  The first name we have is Benjamin Isaac or Isaac Benjamin, born in Fayette.  We are searching for names of parents and siblings.  In later years he went by I. B. Davis.

I.B married Mariah Louisa KIDD (parents were Alsey BARTON and Andrew J. KIDD from Walker county).  The KIDD children were Avery, Joshua, Mariah, William, Mary, Casper, Robert, Martha, James, Manerva, Irene.  Children of I.B. and Mariah were Haywood, John I, Alcy Frances (Hinton), & Kizzie.  In the 1880 census they were living at Moore's Bridge.  I.B. and Mariah moved to Walker County in the late 1800's.  He applied for his Civil War pension in Walker County.  John I. Davis married Elizabeth C. Watkins on July 9, 1891 at the home of I.B. DAVIS in Fayette County.  Elizabeth died and John I. married Lilla Lourene Robertson (my grandmother) from Jefferson County.

If we could find where I.B. DAVIS and his family attended church, there might be a possibility of finding his parent's names on the church records.  Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

TIPPER  •  McDADE  •  KIMBRELL  •  DOBBS  •  HARBIN
JOHNSON  •  STUDDARD  •  BIGGERS

Ann S. Grainger Fri Jun 12 19:41:29 2009
I am interested in informaton on JOHN W. TIPPER and wife, MARGARET McDADE on the 1850-1860-1870 census in Fayette Co., AL.  I believe MARGARET McDADE (identified by full name in daughter, MARGARET SYLVANIA K. TIPPER STUDDARD's death certificate) was the previously unidentified daughter of SAMUEL McDADE and unidentified first wife, who was deceased when he was enumerated with two children under 5, a son and daughter, on the 1830 census in Spartanburg Co., SC.  The son was JAMES DECATUR McDADE.  Shortly after, SAMUEL moved to Lawrence Co., AL, remarried, and then moved to Walker Co., AL, neighboring county of Fayette.

Issue of JOHN W. TIPPER and MARGARET McDADE appear to be:
1) MARY CHRISTIANA TIPPER, born 29 Dec 1844; died 18 Jun 1914, married about 1865 to GEORGE W. KIMBRELL, both buried in Pea Ridge Methodist Church Cemetery, Fayette Co., AL.
2) WILLIAM A? TRIPPER, born 1847
3) SUSAN JANE TIPPER, born 10 Mar 1847; died 20 Sep 1903; married JOHN THOMAS KIMBRELL, brother to GEORGE W. who married her sister and sons of ANDREW J. KIMBRELL.
4) JAMES D. TIPPER (probably named for her brother, JAMES DECATUR McDADE), born 1850, married 01 Feb 1872 to NANCY J. DOBBS.
5) SARAH E. TIPPER, born 1852; married 22 Aug 1859, Fayette Co., AL, to T. I. HARBIN.
6) T. CAROLINA TIPPER, born 1854, Fayette Co., AL; married 29 Dec 1878, Fayette Co., AL, to W. G. JOHNSON.
7) MARGARET SYLVANIA K. TIPPER, born April 1859; died 15 Jun 1938, married GEORGE A. STUDDARD on 6 Jan 1878, Fayette Co., AL, a son of DAVID STUDDARD and MARY BIGGERS.  Both also buried in the Pea Ridge Methodist Cemetery, Fayette Co., AL
8) WARREN TIPPER - difficult to read on 1870 census
9) GEORGE TIPPER - difficult to read on 1870 census
10) MASON TIPPER, born 1864
11) SAMUEL TIPPER, born early 1870 (Possibly named for her father, SAMUEL McDADE??)

Any information would be appreciated.  ~ Ann Grainger

AGALIOTIS

Ann S. Grainger Mon Jul 20 23:19:21 2009
AGALIOTIS family from Greece in Fayette Co., AL — Nomia AGALIOTIS, wife of P. AGALIOTIS was buried in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Fayette Co., AL.  She was born 31 January 1893 and died 27 October 1928.  Her monument states "Mother".  She was the only AGALIOTIS family member buried here.  Wanting to find out more about this young mother, I have been unable to find a death certificate, etc. with "Family Search".  I did find that there were several Greek immigrants who came to Ellis Island, New York in the 1890's and one of them was: Panagostos AGALIOTIS, who sailed from the Greek port of Petras on a ship named "Francessa", that arrived at Ellis Island on 3 Aug 1907.  At that time, he was 28 years old and single.  He was from Machairads in Greece.  Was he the "P" AGALIOTIS, hisband of NOMIA?  Did he marry her in the United States and come to Fayette Co., AL, to work in the coal mining industry and later departed at the death of this young mother?  I would love to know more about NOMIA and her family.  ~ Ann S. STUDDARD  •  JEFFREYS  • STRICKLAND  •  ALDRIDGE
SIMMONS  •  BRACKINS  •  LACKEY

Ann S. Grainger Sat Sep 5 11:23:54 2009
STUDDARD Family of Fayette County, AL, who Died in Mining Accidents — John David STUDDARD was born about 1862, Fayette Co., AL, a son of James STUDDARD and his second wife, Rebecca Caroline JEFFREYS.  John D. STUDDARD died on May 22, 1917, after falling from a railroad car at the Yarborough Mines, according to a data base on Alabama mining accidents.  John was a favorite of the children of his older half sister, Martha Ann STUDDARD and husband, William Jefferson Franklin STRICKLAND.  John was considered exceedingly kind and a good Christian man.  He was a mining foreman and assisted his relatives in finding jobs; but he set a good example of the kind of person the young men would want to emulate at their best.

John was married to Elizabeth Caroline "Lizzie" ALDRIDGE, a daughter of Henry ALDRIDGE and Mickey Jane SIMMONS.  I show they were the parents of five children but this might not be complete. The children were

1) William Authur STUDDARD, born October 12, 1888, died 1961; married Eliza BRACKINS;
2) Jack W. STUDDARD, born March 3, 1892; died March 1, 1970, married Minnie May LACKEY;
3) Hesker STUDDARD, b. 1896; died ?;
4) Venice or Vinnis STUDDARD, born 1906; died February 5, 1914;
5) Alvertes "Virtus" STUDDARD, born 1911; died 1914.

The family were buried at Shilow Cemetery in Kansas, Walker Co., AL.  The same mining causaulty data base showed: "Hester" STUDDARD, probably Hesker, son of John David, who died at Dulin Mine due to fall of rock, on July 25, 1914.  Where were those two mines located - Yarborough and Dulin?  Any additional information on this family would be appreciated.  <anngrainger@knology.net>

STUDDARD  •  CASTLEBERRY  •  BARNETT

Ann S. Grainger Sat Sep 5 13:57:56 2009
Another Coal Mining Fatality in the Studdard Family of Fayette County, Alabama — I overlooked a third fatality in the mines in my previous query, this date.  This was James Andrew STUDDARD, born January 17, 1883, who was killed at Howard Mine in Fayette County, on August 20, 1927, from the fall of rock.  James Andrew (listed as J. A. STUDDARD) in the data base), was the son of Andrew Tank STUDDARD and Martha F. CASTLEBERRY.  His spouse was Aldie L. BARNETT, a daughter of Will M. BARNETT.

HOCUTT  •  MUSGROVE  •  TUCKER  •  GANEY

Ann S. Grainger Sun Sep 6 23:39:46 2009
HELP!  I really, really, need additional information on this new finding.  There is a Death Certificate from Fayette Co., AL, for Martha Jane HOCUTT showing she died at Berry, Fayette County, Alabama, age 103 years old (which is doubtful).  Her spouse was Andrew Jackson HOCUTT.  The death certificate stated that her father was Louis MUSGROVE and her mother was Prudie TUCKER

My great great grandfather, LOUIS V. MUSGROVE was on the 1860 US Census in District 12, in neighboring Walker Co., AL, married to Vilinda GANEY.  I haven't found Louis on the previous 1850 census so don't know if he was previous married to a Prudie TUCKER or not.  Living with Louis and Vilinda was a ten year old MARTHA that has been a mystery to me.  I have no family history on Martha.  Since Louis' wife, Vilinda, was shown with her parents, in 1850, Walker Co., AL, I didn't see how she could be Martha's; but, since her mother died after that census, I speculated that Martha might be a younger sister to Vilinda.  There was a four to five year gap before the second child, my great grandfather, John Francis A. Musgrove was born in January 1855.  Since The Martha in Louis' household was 10 in 1860, she was born about 1850 and would have been age 87, not 103, when she died.  I haven't found Martha and husband, Andrew Jackson HOCUTT on a census yet; but I am hoping someone is familiar with the HOCUTT or TUCKER family history.

One more piece of information: Martha and Andrew had a son, Richard HOCUTT who died 14 Oct 1931 at Sipsey, Walker Co., AL, age 56 years and 6 months (born about 1873) - mother listed as Martha MUSGROVE and father as Jack HOCUTT on his death certificate. I would really like to know if this Martha is my Great Grandfather's half sister and if anyone knows anything about her mother, Prudie TUCKER. ~ Ann S. Grainger, 3301 Ohara Road SW, Huntsville, AL 35801, Tel. 256-883-1230 or email: anngrainger@knology.net

DAVIS  •  GOODSON

Susan Hughes Mon Oct 19 12:46:32 2009
I am seeking information on LEONA (LONIE) DAVIS born about 1880 in Alabama.  She married HOMER GOODSON in 1908 in Monroe County, MS.  The were listed on the 1910 Federal Census in Splunge, Monroe County, MS. with one daughter.  Living in the household with Homer and Lonie were TOM AND LUCY DAVIS, a married couple, also born in Alabama.  There is a good possibility that LONIE DAVIS was Native American.  I lost her after the 1910 census, but believe she must have died about 1912, because Homer married again in 1913.  I am searching in Fayette County because I found a LONIE DAVIS on the 1900 census for Fayette County.  Is the LONIE DAVIS that is JOHN L and CHARITY L DAVIS'S daughter?

LAWRENCE  •  STUDDARD  •  EDMONDS

Shelby Lawrence Sartain Tue Nov 10 20:18:30 2009
Searching for information on Richan Lawrence born Fayette, AL in 1868 married Darthia Studdard after 1910.  He is not shown on the census with Darthia and 3 sons.  His parents Alexander & Martha (Edmonds) Lawrence.

STUDDARD  •  CAROTHERS  •  ANSLEY  •  GORDON  •  RICHEY

William R Stoddard Fri Dec 18 12:51:47 2009
Was Samuel STUDDARD of Laurens District, SC and Fayette County, Alabama - a STUDDARD or was he a CAROTHERS that had been adopted by David STUDDARD, Sr. and Martha ANSLEY, who were on the 1790 Census in Laurens District, SC with an unusual large number of children?

This question has recently came up after descendents of Samuel's brother, Andrew STUDDARD, had a different DNA than that of older brother, David STUDDARD, Jr's descendents who match STUDDARD DNA. Andrew STUDDARD's male descendents appear to be more closely related to CAROTHERS and not STUDDARD.  This suggests some of David STUDDARD, Sr. and Martha ANSLEY's presumed issue might have been adopted CAROTHERS children.  Since Andrew and Samuel STUDDARD married sisters, two daughters of Adam GORDON and Mary RICHEY, it is assumed they might have been closer than some of the other children and perhaps were full brothers.  Andrew and Samuel named children after each other.  This DNA research needs to be confirmed.  Need a volunteer of a direct male descendent of Samuel STUDDARD to confirm whether he too could have been an adopted CAROTHERS.  Please contact me for instructions on how to take this simple and inexpensive DNA salvia test.  I will pay for the first volunteer.  Please contact me at <wrstoddard@gmail.com>  ~ Thanks, William R Stoddard/Studdard
