NOTE: Although there is some speculation that John THOMPSON married Nancy JEFFERSON or Nancy HAM, the evidence proves that she was in fact the daughter of John and Jane VAN HOOSE (VANHOOSE) and an heir of Valentine "Felty" VAN HOOSE.  John M. THOMPSON was appointed administrator of the estate of Jane VAN HOOSE in 1856, claiming "that his wife Nancy M. and Sarah J. McGILL are the heirs and only heirs of said Estate known to him / the latter being a minor heir and both residing in the County of Fayette" [2].  The estate comprised 80 acres identified as SWNE Section 22 and SWNW Section 23 of Township 15S, Range 12W.  This property, located about three miles north of Fayette Court House, had been patented to a John VANHOOSE "of Lauderdale County" in October 1834 [3].  During probate proceedings on Valentine VAN HOOSE's estate in 1851, Mr. THOMPSON represented his children, "who are heirs of said Estate." [4]

John M. THOMPSON received a federal land patent in April 1848 for nearly 40 acres in Sec. 3, Twp. 15S, Range 12W [3].  He was recorded on the 1850 US census of Fayette County with real property valued at $250 [p. 38].  Other members of his household at this time included his wife Nancy M. and two daughters: Rebeka A. and Martha L.  Mr. THOMPSON acquired additional federal lands comprising more than 240 acres in Sec. 2 & Sec. 10, Twp. 15S, Range 13W, in June 1858 [3].
