Starling-Fleming Cemetery
Complete Listing April 2001
Survey and Pictures by Gayle Thomas
Location: just north of Henry County road 36 (also known as Pelham Road) in section 31 of Township 7 N, Range 29 E. Most of the land within a mile
of the cemetery still belongs to a Starlings or Fleming. The cemetery was cleaned up and fenced a few years ago by Merlyn Carter, husband of Janice
Fleming Carter, whose ancestors are buried here.
Fleming-Starling Cemetery says the sign. Starling-Fleming Cemetery say the older folks in the community. Either way, this little family cemetery
contains around 40 named graves, a dozen unnamed graves, and many more unmarked graves of “Sandy Bottom” pioneers. The oldest marker dates to 1857.
The youngest marker is from 1948. The official name as listed in Dr. W. Craig Remington's "Historic Atlas of Alabama Cemetery Locations" is
Starling-Fleming.

There is one marker which needs some explaining. It clearly says:
ATA DOSWELL
MALONE D
AUG 12 1872
JUN 22 1922
The marker is locally made, and does not resemble any military marker.
Ata Doswell was the daughter of William J. Doswell and his wife Margret 'Peggy' [Melton] Doswell. I have two older siblings Opie and Ora, Opie b. 1869
died 1902, so Ora is probably the unknown infant, who's birth date I have as being born 1870.
