William Walker McDanielContributed by Mary Woodall William graduated from Bowdon College in Bowdon, GA., May 1861, and joined his uncle's, Rev. Charles Addison McDaniel's, company which became Company B, Cobb's Legion, Infantry as 1st. Lieut. Rev. McDaniel was head of the College. When his uncle went to another company William was made Captain and lead the group through out the war. He was wounded twice and retired with the rank of Major. While on furlough in Feb. 1862, William learned that his younger (17) brother John wanted to enlist. John's parents thought he would be safe with his older brother and let him enlist. Unfortunately John (19) was killed in the Battle of Chancillorsville while William was wounded there. William married Marion Frances Horne Creel after the war. Her first husband had been killed in the war. Her family lived near Clopton, Al. The Hornes gave the bell from their home to the Clopton Methodist Church where it remains today. William and John McDaniel are buried at the Clopton Meth. Church Cemetery. |
