Abbeville, Alabama

Abbeville, Alabama, the County seat of Henry County, the county that is older than the state of Alabama itself, is located in the Southeastern part of the state, fourteen miles from the Georgia border and about fifty miles from the Florida panhandle.

Abbeville is named for a nearby Indian Creek named "Yatta Abba." The Indian name means " A grove of dogwood trees." The Creek is also known as Abbey Creek. Abbeville was settled just a few days prior to 1820 but was a growing village with a substantial number of residents by 1823. It was named the county seat in 1831. A Post Office was established in 1833. Abbeville was incorporated in 1872.
