Descendants of Garrett Kirk

Jackson Co. Alabama was the home of this Kirk family for three generations with some descendants still living there.  Samuel H. Kirk first came into Jackson County before 1820 and his grandson, William Irison Kirk was sheriff there after the Civil War and later mayor of the town of Scottsboro.  They raised a large family and most of their children moved on to Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Samuel H. Kirk, generation 2, is the oldest generation that we have documented proof of ancestry.  We have found little written proof for Garrett Kirk, generation 1, being his father; however we find strong circumstantial evidence.  The 1790 Federal census of Cecil Co. Maryland shows a Garrett Kirk with a son the right age to fit Samuel.  A Garrett Kirk and a Samuel Kirk are found together on a tax list in 1806 in Knox Co. Kentucky.  On the 1850 census of Jackson Co. AL, Samuel H. Kirk reported that he was born in Maryland.  If Garrett Kirk is his father then his mother was Mary Hutchison Kirk, perhaps Samuel's middle name.  'Garrett' was the name that Samuel H. Kirk named his first son.

There was a John Kirk, probably father of Garrett Kirk, who died in Cecil County, Maryland about 1790 and in 1791 there was an inventory and bond and the bond was signed by Garrett Kirk.  Evidence of ancestry is very hard to find seven generations back.

Also see "The Heritage of Jackson County, Alabama" page 222-223 for "The Lineage of Samuel H. Kirk".

1850 - Marion Co. Tn census,  1860 - Wright Co. Mo census

Information from Wright Co. MO Civil War Union web site:  Thomas WYNNE b. 1829, Marion Co, Tennessee, d. 1898, Cleveland Co, Oklahoma Thomas served as Private and 2nd Sergeant in Company A, 34th Tennessee Infantry.  Thomas' father was Obadiah Wynne b. 1811 in Marion Co, TN was killed by John C. Fremont's soldiers in Missouri during the War. Not sure if he was in Confederate Army or not, just that he was on his way to see his brother Anderson Wynne.  On the trip he ran into Capt Fremont. He ordered Obadiah to surrender his rifle and he refused.  Fremont shot and killed him. Fremont then buried him in a grave so shallow his toes stuck out.  His family went looking for him and gave him a proper burial. What it must have been like for Thomas to return home to find his father also killed.  (One source says Fremont's soldiers and another says Fremont himself killed him.)  The WYNNE family is also an old Colonial line originating from England.  The BEAN family was of Scotch-Irish descent, were first settlers of TN, and were riflemen at King's Mountain in the Rev War.  by Grace Harris Reynolds in CA

Notes for WILLIAM IRISON KIRK:
We have never found his middle name written but surely his son, George Kirk, knew what it was as he named a son Irison Commodore Kirk after both of his grandparents.  W. I. Kirk and Francis were married by his uncle, Samuel Beene who was a primitive Baptist preacher.  W. I. Kirk was a mason and Justice of Peace for a while.  He was Sheriff of Jackson County 1869-1871.  He was Mayor of Scottsboro 1904-1906.  Out of 17 years, he kept the County Farm 11 years at foot of July Mountain and after that he kept the County Farm on his own home place 8 miles north of Scottsboro, Ala. known as Maynard's Cove.  This farm was close to Liberty Church and cemetery.  It was 240 acres - one half of which was in the mountains.  Then W. I. lived in Scottsboro for 19 or 20 years and ran a blacksmith shop there.  George Kirk bought that 240 acre place a few years before coming to Texas.

Notes for FRANCES REBECCA TUCKER:
On the 1910 census she is shown as Frances R. (Rebecca?)  Her obit listed Frances E. and carved in granite is Frances C.  Her name was shown as Frankie on George Kirk's 50th anniversary announcement.  She had a brother, Archie Tucker, for whom William Archie Kirk was named.  She had a sister, Fannie, who married a Bryant and they had children: Jeff, Dean, G.A. Notes for ELIZA JANE KIRK:
On the 1850 census of Marion County, Tennessee, in the household of Garret Kirk there is a daughter, Alisey, age 16, born in Tennessee.  My Great-Grandfather, William Irison Kirk, evidently passed down his sister's name to my Aunt Myrtle Kirk, the keeper of the records, as 'Mary Jane Kirk'.  Garret Kirk was involved in a divorce with his first wife, Mary Ann McCrary.  There were three children by this marriage.  The youngest, Gilbert Lee, at that time a baby, stayed with their mother, Mary Ann later married James Champion.  The other two children, William I. and Eliza Jane, were with their father.  Garret Kirk and his second wife, Cynthia Choat, along with two of her children and three of Garrett and Cynthia's children on the 1850 census of Marion County, Tennessee.  Gerri Garrett: Eliza was living with daughter, Lydia in 1900, Brush Creek Twsp. Wright Co. Missouri, born May and 66 years old (1834).  She was the mother of 7 children, 6 still living.  She was probably married in Marion Co. TN.  Nathaniel Hayworth was living close to Garret Kirk, 1850.  Goodspeeds shows a divorce between Nathaniel Haworth and Eliza Young in May 1866.

Notes for ELI W. YOUNG:
The 1910 census of Wright Co. MO shows Eliza J. Young age 77 and widowed for 7 years.  This would make Eli's death date about 1903.
