Saltworks of Gallatin Co IL - HILL - COLBERT
Jon Musgrave  Tue, 5 May 1998 23:05:52 -0500
I am researching the government saltworks of Gallatin County, Illinois.  These are immediately north of Lauderdale County, Alabama. Someone recently sent me a newspaper clipping from 1930 that gave some of their family history. It noted that "Jess Hill, served as a government ranger for quite a while to guard the ox wagon caravans in hauling salt from the salt works near Equality, Ill. to Florence, Ala.  They had to be guarded from the bushwacking attacks of skulking Indians."
The article later dates this event as 1818, or one or two years earlier since Jess' brother moved from Georgia to Illinois in 1818, following one of Jess' trips. Has anyone ever come across information about these salt caravans? Who was living at Florence at this date. Is this area still a part of Cherokee/Chickasaw lands at this time?
Also, I am looking for a descendent list of Chickasaw leader Capt. James Logan Colbert, who arrived in America from Soctland in January 1736 and died in November 1784 on his way to persuade other chiefs to switch sides from the King to the Americans. There are Colberts at the saltworks early from Alabama, but I am missing the generations to connect.
Third, in my research I have noticed a number of free blacks from Lauderdale County filing emancipation and other freedom papers in the Gallatin County, Illinois, slave registries.
Thank you. Check out my Southern Illinois History Page [The URL previously given here is no longer valid.]

GREENHAW - HENRY - BRIDGES - FOSTER - ETHRIDGE - BAKER - SHULER
GibsonHamm Thu, 7 May 1998 17:47:00 EDT
I am looking for information on the GREENHAW, GREENHOW, GREEHSHAW, GREENSHOW family.
Jonathan GREENHAW, Sr. (maybe spelled GREENHOW, GREENSHOW, GREENHOW or GREENAUGH), was born in 1757 in Williamsburg, VA and died 1826 in Limestone County, AL.  He was a preacher at Reunion First Christian Church.  He married twice, Rachel HENRY in 1768 or 1700 and Ann -----, date unknown.  Rachel and Jonathan had nine children and moved from Virginia to Caswell County, North Carolina in 1790 and then later to Tennessee and Alabama in the Huntsville area.
Two of Jonathan's sons were Greenberry GREENHAW, born between 1775 and 1794, died 1825 or 26 in Alabama, and Ephraim Barton GREENHAW, born 1-10-1818 in Lauderdale County, Florence, Alabama, died 3-1-1905 in Mt. Judea, Arkansas. Greenberry married twice, first wife unknown, second wife, Sarah "Sally" BRIDGES, married on 6-13-1813 in Sumner County, Tennessee.  They had four children, names and information unknown.
Ephraim Barton GREENHAW, one of my direct descendents, married Angeline FOSTER on 9-12-1838 in Lawrence County, Tenneesee.  They had three children, names and information unknown.
Ephraim Barton GREENHAW then married Rebecca ETHRIDGE on 3-12-1846 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.  This is my direct family line.  Rebecca was born on 12-11-1820 and died 2-17-1898.  She was the daughter of Matthew and Mary ETHRIDGE who lived in Lawrence County, Tennessee when Matthew died. Mary then moved to Searcy County, Arkansas where she died in the 1870's.
Matthew ETHRIDGE was the son of Thomas ETHRIDGE born about 1775 in North Carolina but moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee in about 1816.  he was apparently a wealthy plantation owner and money lender and died 10-15-1855.
One of Ephraim and Rebecca's children, and my direct descendant, is George W. GREENHAW, born 10-5-1839 and died 10-26-1907.  I am assuming that he was born in Lawrence County, but do not know this for certain.
Ephraim and Rebecca's other children that I know about and think are really the children of this couple are: Franklin Marion GREENHAW, born 8-19-1848, probably in Lawrence County, died March 18, 1913.  He married Margaret C. BAKER. Tennessee GREENHAW, born September 01, 1854, died February 27, 1906. Andrew Jackson GREENHAW, born April 3, 1865. Married Caroline SHULER. There may be other children from the ETHRIDGE/GREENHAW marriage.
I would like to obtain/share information regarding these GREENHAWs and their spouses.
