Andrew DeVilbiss- died October 30, 1864
Local lore about this man is that his wife died in California and his granddaughter
came to Florence with 2 stones from his wife's grave in order to "reunite" them. He is
buried in the Soldier's Rest Section of the Florence City Cemetery. [ Wendy Cabler ]

On 25 Apr 2006, Jeff DeVilbiss of Bayside, California, wrote: In regard to Andrew DeVilbiss's Gravesite, it was his Great- Great- Great -Grand Daughter who brought the (3) Stones from Andrew's wife's Gravesite in California. She and her brother and A cousin laid the stones before the Headstone at a Family and Florence Community Gathering to commemorate the then, (1990s) discovery of Andrew DeVilbiss's remains. The 3 stones represented Mary DeVilbiss and their 2 sons who left the South after Andrew's Death
in 1864, and after a covered wagon journey across the continent, settled in the
Cottoneva valley of far Northern California's Coast. The stones were gathered below the small Family Cemetery in the Cottoneva Creek, driven across Country in a Tent Trailer by me, Andrew's great-great grandson, Jeff DeVilbiss and my two, then small children.

MAIMIE HAYES GLENN

I don't know which of the stories that are told of her are true but supposedly she haunts the Off Campus Bookstore. There are several stories surrounding this child's death; that she died of a bite from a rabid puppy, that she chased the puppy into the street and was run over, and that she died of either yellow fever or some other fever.
