ANDERSON

The Florence Times, Friday, 22 Apr 1898
Death at Cloverdale
     Mr. Samuel P. Anderson, a prominent citizen of the Cloverdale neighborhood, brother of Mr. Hinkle Anderson, died at 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon last, after a lingering sickness of about three months. His disease was a bronchial and lung trouble. He was about 36 years old and leaves a wife and four children. The interment took place at Chapel on Sunday to the presence of one of the largest congregations ever assembled at that church, the funeral being conducted by Revs. Smith and Rice.
     Mr. Anderson was one of the active and useful citizens in his community, and his loss will be severely felt. He was a steward in the Methodist church and a zealous member of that great body of Christians. He bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends.

DEATHS
     The Times last week briefly mentioned the death of our well known citizen, Mr. John A. Anderson, which occurred o the 7th at his home on the Hood plantation. Mr. Anderson was one of our best citizens, a good man, deserving and having the esteem and respect of all who knew him, and in his death there were general expression of sorrow at his departure for that “bourne whence no traveler returns.” Mr. Anderson leaves a wife and five children: Mrs. J. T. Darby of Burcham Mills, and William W., Henry C., Calvin P., and Lee Anderson. The interment took take [sic] place at Wesley Chapel, the funeral being conducted by Rev Mr. Harris.

HENRY ANDERSON DROWNED.
Former Florence Man Meets Sudden Death in Florida.
     Henry C. Anderson, a former citizen of Florence, was drowned at Boca Grande, Florida, a few days ago, according to a telegram received here Wednesday by Mr. C. W. Ashcraft. Mr. Anderson’s home here was identified by a letter signed by Mr. Ashcraft which was found on his body. He was in the employ of the Tampa Dredging Company, and his life was largely spent on the water. The body was interred in Florida.
     Mr. Anderson and his family moved to Florida about two years ago, but the family returned here about a year ago because that climate was unfavorable to their health. He remained there, while his family resided here. He is survived by his wife and seven children. He leaves also three brothers and a sister, Mrs. Jesse Darby and Will and Lee Anderson of this county and Calvin Anderson of Oklahoma.

DEATH OF MRS. MARGARET ANDERSON
     Mrs. Margaret Anderson, widow of the late J. A. Anderson, died on Tuesday night of last week at the home of her daughter Mrs. Jesse Darby, at Leighton. Her body was interred in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Mrs. Anderson was about 70 years of age. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jesse Darby, and three sons, W. W., Calvin P., and Lee Anderson.

DEATH CALLS EX-MERCHANT
Long Illness Fatal To T. H. Anderson
     Thomas Hinkle Anderson, aged 78, died yesterday afternoon at the family residence, 810 Kendrick street, after a lingering illness which developed into pneumonia. Mr. Anderson was a lifelong resident of the district and was a retired merchant.
     Surviving are three sons, W. W. Anderson of Avondale, Cal., I. W. Anderson of Florence, and J. D. Anderson of Nashville, and three daughters, Miss Pearl Anderson, Mrs. J. W. Paulk and Mrs. J. F. Koonce, all of Florence.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the North Wood Avenue Methodist church, with Rev M. M. Davidson, presiding elder of the Florence district of the Methodist church officiating, assisted by Rev. T. H. Johnson, pastor of the church. Interment followed in Wesley Chapel cemetery, with Morrison & Phillips in charge.
     Active pallbearers were Robert Malone, N. B. Kimble, George Beasley, Lester Walker, J. B. McKnight and R. C. Poag. Honorary Pallbearers were the member of his Sunday school class.

MRS. ANDERSON IS LAID TO REST
Florence Woman Died Friday At Memphis Clinic
     Funeral services for Mrs. Roberta K. Anderson, aged 70, native and lifelong resident of Lauderdale county, who resided at 506 Campbell street, Florence, and who died suddenly of a heart attack Friday morning at 3:15 o’clock at Campbell’s Clinic, Memphis, where she had been removed following a fall three weeks ago in which she suffered a broken hip, were conducted here this afternoon.
     Rites were conducted at 4 o’clock at the First Methodist church, Florence, by Dr. L. O. Sturdivant, pastor, burial following in Florence cemetery, Brown Service directing.
     Mrs. Anderson, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Broadfoot, pioneer residents of this section, was a devout member of First Methodist church.
     Surviving in addition to her husband, W. W. Anderson, of Florence, are two daughters, Mrs. Frank Stockard and Miss Willie Anderson both of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. J. T. Haddock, Florence, and Mrs. William Simmons of Tuscaloosa, and three brothers, Ben, William and Thomas Broadfoot, of Florence.
     Active pallbearers were Earl Anderson, Price Darby, V. H. Darby, Clyde Anderson, Price Haddock and Douglas Daniels.
     Honorary pallbearers were Dr. O. D. Ingram, Homer Wesson, Bob Wilson, Jr., Harold S. May, W. S. Pierce, Marcy B. Darnall, Jr., Lawrence Perry, Emmett Daniels, Charles Phillips, W. H. Martin, A. H. Puller, Harvey Ezell, Robert Herston, Andy Burrows, Elbert Burns, Bob Lovelace, F. J. Shelnutt and Ed Hafner.

Mr. Anderson Buried Today
     W. W. (Uncle Bill) Anderson, of 506 West Campbell Street, Florence, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at ECM Hospital following an extended illness. He was 87.
     Mr. Anderson had been retired for 13 years and previous to that time was active as a livestock dealer and farmer. He was a life resident of Lauderdale County. He had been a member of the First Methodist Church for many years.
Funeral services were at 4 p.m. today from Brown Service Chapel, Florence. Dr. Edwin Branscomb, pastor of the First Methodist Church, and Rev. Shirley Lowery officiated. Interment was in Florence Cemetery.
     He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank Stockard Jr., and Mrs. Jack McDade, both Florence; a grandson, Frank Stockard III, Florence; a brother, L. G. Anderson, Chattanooga, Tenn., and a number of nieces and nephews.
     Bearers were nephews, T. W. Broadfoot, Andrew Haddock, Hollis Broadfoot, Vernon Darby, Price Darby, Herschel Anderson, Earl Anderson, Clyde Anderson, Honorary bearers wee Dr. G. D. HADDOCK

MRS. HADDOCK IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Funeral Services Will Be Conducted Wednesday
     Mrs. Lennie Lindsey Haddock, aged 82, widow of the late J. M. Haddock, died at her home, 218 West Tombigbee street, Florence, at 10 o’clock Monday night following an illness of three months.
     Born in Lauderdale county on Sept. 20, 1862, Mrs. Haddock was a life long resident of this district. A member of the Methodist church since girlhood, her membership had been placed with the First Methodist church in Florence for more than 40 years. She was active in the work of the church as long as her health permitted.
Surviving are one son, H. O. Anderson, of Cloverdale, 12 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
     The body will remain at Brown Service funeral home until time for the funeral services Wednesday. Funeral rites will be conducted from the First Methodist church at 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon with Dr. R. L. Archibald, district superintendent of the Methodist church in charge. Rev. J. A. Gann, of Huntsville, and Rev. Robert Sanderson of Cloverdale, will assist in conducting the services.
     Pall bearers will be Donald White, Eugene Duncan, Oscar Kennedy, Albert Darby, A. M. Brown and J. L. Goyer. Interment will be in Florence cemetery with Brown Service in charge of arrangements.
[NOTE: Mrs. Lennie Haddock was the 1st wife of Samuel P. Anderson. After their divorce, she married Jonathan Mark Haddock.]

KOONCE

DEATH OF MR. COLUMBUS KOONCE
     Mr. Columbus Franklin Koonce, one of the prominent elders of North Lauderdale, died at his home at Salem church, near Cloverdale, on Saturday night last after an illness of several weeks, resulting from a stroke of paralysis. The second stroke sustained within a few weeks. The interment was made at Wesley Chapel, the funeral service being conducted by Revs. J. S. Martin and W. S. Brooks, the pastors of the Cloverdale and Oakland charges.
     Mr. Koonce was about 70 years of age and is survived by his wife and two sons and four daughters, all of whom are grown to maturity and married, and all residing in the community I which they were born and reared. The deceased was one of the most worthy citizens of our county. For many years he had been an official and loyal member of the Methodist church, and a consistent advocate of all enterprises of the community in which he lived, for the upbuilding of the people and the advancement of their interests. A good man after years of usefulness, has gone to his eternal reward.

MRS. KOONCE IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Cloverdale Resident Will Be Buried on Sunday
     Mrs. Mary E. Koonce, aged 81, widow of the late C. F. Koonce, who died 18 years ago, passed away last night at 11:53 o’clock at her home in the Cloverdale community, Lauderdale county, after an illness of 16 months. A native and lifelong resident of the Cloverdale community, Mrs. Koonce spent the last 46 years of her life in the same house. She was a devoted member of the Wesleys Chapel Methodist church.
     Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. J. E. Lovelace, Mrs. R. J. Austin, Mrs. Henry Marks and Mrs. Madge Harbin, all of Cloverdale; two sons, W. C. Koonce, of Florence, and J. P. Koonce, of Cloverdale, and 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at Wesleys [sic] Chapel at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. Grady Allridge, a Methodist minister. Burial will follow there, Brown-Service, Florence, directing.
     The following grandchildren will be active pallbearers, E. K. Lovelace, James Lovelace, Lloyd Austin, John Austin, Glenn Marks and Cecil Harbin.
     Those who will serve as honorary pallbearers are J. D. McCorkle, R. J. Austin, Dave McCorkle, J. M. Lewis, G. J. Paulk, Everett Fowler, Allen Hendrix, Grover Hendrix, Judge J. F. Koonce, S. P. Former Probate Judge of Lauderdale County Dies at Home Today
     James Franklin Koonce, aged 81, former probate judge of Lauderdale county, died at 2 a. m. this morning at his home, 401 North Walnut street Florence, following an extended illness.
     Judge Koonce was born in Lauderdale county, and was prominent here during his active life. He served 12 years as probate judge of Lauderdale county, eight years as county superintendent of education, was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1915, was the first state president of Civitan International club as well as a president of the Florence club.
     He also served as grand commander of the United Order of the Golden Cross of Alabama, and was twice elected worshipful master of the Florence Masonic Lodge of which he was a member at the time of his death, and a member of the Knights of Pythias.
     He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mollie Anderson Koonce of the home; two sons, Merwin and James A., both of Florence; and five daughters Miss Nola E. Koonce, Florence Mrs. R. B. Dowdy, Montgomery, Mrs. C. C. Crossman, Nashville, Tenn., Mrs. B. F. Riley, III, Florence, and Mrs. G. M. Hamby, Florence.
     Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p. m. at the First Methodist church. Revs. O. K. Lamb, pastor and S. W. Brooks will officiate. Burial will follow in the Florence cemetery. The body will remain at the Brown Service funeral home until the time of the service.
     Active bearers will be Judge Herman K. Longshore, Turner Shelby, Mayor E. F. Yeilding, W. A. Graham, Ben Fuqua, and Earl Anderson.
     Honorary bearers will be members of the board of stewards of the First Methodist church, the Men’s Bible class and the Florence Masonic Lodge.
     Arrangements are by Brown Service, Florence.

MRS. KOONCE, 92
     Mrs. Mollie J. Koonce, 92, widow of the late Judge James F. Koonce, died Saturday at 9 a.m. at the family residence, 402 N. Walnut, Florence.
     A lifelong resident of Lauderdale county she was the daughter of T. Hinkle and Martha Anderson Hinkle. Her father was a Cloverdale merchant.
     Mrs. Koonce attended the old Synodical College and was married to Judge Koonce at Cloverdale in 1892. They moved to Florence in the early 1900’s.
     She was a former member of the Eastern Star, was a member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and Woman’s Society of Christian Service and was a member of First Methodist Church.
     Funeral services will be today at 3 p.m. at First Methodist Church with Dr. A. Tillman Sprouse officiating.
Burial will be in Florence Cemetery with Morrison-Elkins Funeral Home directing.
     The body will be at the funeral home until time for services.
     Survivors are two sons, Merwin T. Koonce and James A. Koonce, both of Florence; five daughters, Miss Nola Koonce Mrs. Ben F. Riley, III, Mrs. G. M. Hamby, all of Florence, Mrs. Rufus B. Dowdy Sr., of Montgomery, Mrs. C. C. Crossman of Nashville; a brother, James D. Anderson Sr., of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Paulk, Miss Pearl Anderson, both of Florence; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers will be Earle Dearman, Wendell Edwards W. A. Graham, Ben Fuqua, James R. Lehr, Jack Scarbrough, Nicholas Winn, Turner Shelby.
     Honorary bearers will be members of the Men’s Bible Class of First Methodist Church.
     Memorials to the WCTU were requested in lieu of flowers.

McCORKLE

MRS. M’CORKLE IS TAKEN BY DEATH
     Mrs. George McCorkle passed away about noon today at the home of a son, D. M. McCorkle, at Cloverdale.
Mrs. McCorkle lived in Florence for 37 years and for the past three years has made her home with her son in Cloverdale. She was a member of the North Wood Avenue Methodist church, Florence.
     Surviving in addition is another son, Robert, of Karval, Col.; a daughter, Mrs. W. A. Mallory of Canyon City, Ohio; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the Wesley chapel. Interment will follow in the Wesley Chapel cemetery. Brown Service, Florence, in charge.

George S. McCorkle Dies in Cloverdale
     George S. McCorkle, 88, Cloverdale, died at his residence at 10 o’clock Wednesday night.
He is survived by two sons, D. M. Cloverdale,; J. H. Darbal, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. W. A. Mallory, Canon City, Colo; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
     He was a charter member of the North Wood Avenue Methodist church of Florence.
     Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Wesley chapel with burial in Wesley Chapel cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. A. C. Blackburn, pastor of the North Wood Avenue Methodist church, assisted by Rev. L. D. Howard, Cloverdale.
     The body will be at Brown Service Funeral home in Florence until Saturday morning when it will be taken to the home of D. M. McCorkle in Cloverdale.
     Active bearers will be Floyd Fowler, Everett Fowler, Vernon Cash, Dalton Sharp, Coy Smith, and Herbie Daniel.
Arrangements are by Brown Service of Florence.

     Mrs. Mary Leola McCorkle, 80, Cloverdale, died at the residence Monday at 8:45 p.m.
     She was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County, a member of Cloverdale Methodist Church.
     Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, Rev. George Bretherick officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Morrison –Elkins directing.
     The body will lie in state at the funeral home until time for the service.
     She is survived by her husband, David M. McCorkle; a daughter, Mrs. W. H. Kephart, Cloverdale; two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Austin, Cloverdale, Mrs. Bessie Dulin, Cloverdale; two brothers, Floyd Fowler, Florence, Everett Fowler, Cloverdale; a granddaughter, Mrs. Donald Perkins; two great-grandchildren.

Mr. McCorkle
     David M. McCorkle, 88, of Cloverdale, died this morning at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Annex.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Lauderdale County, a member of the Cloverdale United Methodist Church and a retired mail carrier and farmer.
     He was the husband of the late Leola Fowler McCorkle.
     Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Henry Kephart, Cloverdale; a granddaughter, Mrs. Don Perkins, Cloverdale; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert, Karval, Colo.; a sister, Mrs. Cora Mallory, Colorado Springs, Colo.
     Services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. from Morrison-Elkins Chapel in Florence by the Rev. James Webster and the Rev. Robert Craft. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Morrison-Elkins Funeral Home of Florence directing.
Bearers will be John Dooley, Bill Dooley, Dave Dooley, Frank Dooley, Andrew Fowler, Dan Richardson.

OLIVE

The Florence Times, Saturday, 9 Jan 1897
Richard Olive Dead.
     Mr. Richard Olive, a citizen well known in Lauderdale, died at his home near Iron City, Tenn., on the 22d of December, aged 69 years, 10 months and 9 days. Mr. Olive was a good man, a firm friend, hospitable neighbor and worthy citizen. In his death his community suffers a severe loss. His kindly regard for a appreciation of The Times drew its editor warmly to him, and we lament with his family and his old friends in sorrow at his death.

Death of Mrs. Richard Olive
     Mrs. Richard Olive, eldest sister of our townsman, Mr. T. H. Anderson, died at the home of her son, Mr. W. R. Smith, at Cloverdale, on the 7th instant, in the 65th year of her age. The enterment [sic] was made in the cemetery at Wesley Chapel Friday afternoon. Mrs. Olive is survived by four children, Mrs. Cornelia Bevis of Waterloo, Mrs. Fannie Thrasher of Cloverdale, Mrs. George L. McCorkle of North Florence, and Mr. W. R. Smith of Cloverdale. She was a most estimable Christian lady, and her death is lamented by a large circle of friends and relatives.

SMITH

W. REEDER SMITH DIES AT HOME AT CLOVERDALE
     W. Reeder Smith, 72, one of the oldest residents of the county, passed away at his home near Cloverdale Wednesday evening at 7:45 o’clock, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at Wesley’s chapel with Rev. B. H. Seay of the Methodist church conducting final rites. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Brown directing.
     Deceased, who had lived in that section for many years, is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lucile Bates, of Cloverdale, and one sister, Mrs. G. L. McCorkle, also of that section.

TERRELL

DEATH TAKES MRS. TERRELL
Funeral Services Are Conducted Today
     Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Terrell, aged 71, died at the residence in Oakland community, West Lauderdale county, Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock.
     Surviving in addition to her husband, Carroll Terrell, are three sons, James Anderson and Pew and Griffin Terrell, all of Florence, and two daughters, Mrs. Ann Richardson, of Cloverdale, and Mrs. Lina O’Neal, of Pittsburgh, Pa.
     Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of Pew Terrell, 909 Royal avenue, Florence, with Rev. C. C. Godbey, pastor of St. James Methodist church, officiating. Interment followed in Florence cemetery, Fielder directing.
[NOTE: She was the widow of John A. Anderson who was a son of William R. Anderson.]

THRASHER

MRS. THRASHER BURIED TODAY
Final Rites Held At Wesley Chapel
     Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Thrasher, aged 72, of Cloverdale were held this morning at 10 o’clock at Wesley’s Chapel, with Rev. S. W. Brooks in charge. Interment was made at the cemetery there, Morrison and Phillips being in charge of arrangements.
     Mrs. Thrasher died Tuesday morning at 4:30 at El Reposo sanitarium, near here. She had been a life-long resident of this county.
     The active pallbearers were Carl Koonce, Sam Haddock, Allen Hendrix, D. M. McCorkle, and Lee Anderson.
     Mrs. Thrasher is survived by seven daughters, Mrs. Elmer Hitchcock, Mrs. T. E. Thrasher and Mrs. R. J. Darby, of Florence; Mrs. Kornie M. Adams, of Waterloo, and Misses Sallie, Mary Jo and Maud Thrasher, of Sheffield; three sons, Pugh Thrasher, of Cloverdale, Willie Thrasher, of Florence, and John Thrasher, of Sheffield; one brother, Reeder Smith of Cloverdale, and two sisters, Mrs. Marion Bevis of Waterloo, and Mrs. G. L. McCorkle of Florence.
