Mr. John McMurtrey

Mr. John McMurtrey, one of Lauderdale's oldest citizens, died at the home of his son, on Cowpen Creek on Tuesday night last at the advanced age of 83 years.  He had been sick some weeks, but up to his attack he was in robust health for one of his years.  He had been a resident of the community in which he died for a period of 60 years and always maintained the respect and esteem of the people.  He was an upright citizen and a good man.


John McMurtrey, was the widower of Margaret Stutts McMurtrey and son of Matthew McMurtrey and his first wife, Ruth McDonald McMurtrey.  John  was born 2 Nov 1814 in Bedford County, Tennessee, and died 17/19 Nov 1985. He  was buried in the Stutts Cemetery at Milner's Chapel.    Judy Miller
