The Hammonds Family

William Andrew "Bill Monk" Hammonds on the previous pages,  was the second of eleven children born to John Clemons and Sarah (Lovell) Hammonds. When William Andrew was born on April 28,1841 the family was living in Tennessee, by 1857 the family had settled on a farm South West of Arthur, now known as Grassy, in Lauderdale County, Alabama.  There is a small cemetery located on the home place that contains the graves of John Clemons, his wife Sarah, their son William Andrew and other Hammonds family members.

Children of John Clemons and Sarah (Lovell) Hammonds were:
1. Josephus who married Mary Jane Ingram and migrated to Texas
2. William Andrew married Cynthia Sledge and remained in Lauderdale County, Alabama
3. Clemons Calvin who died in prison during the War Between the States
4. James Jasper who married Julia Ann Brown
5. John C., Jr. who married Emma Elisha Brown
6. Susan Mae who married Lafayette Williams
7. Thomas Newton who married Vina Stutts
8. Mary Elizabeth who married Moses Littrell and migrated to Texas
9. Sarah Boggs who married S. Lecil "Leet" Shelton. One of the children born to this couple, John Dee Shelton, was accused and tried for the murder of his Uncle William A. Hammonds.
10. Jessie Winfield married Sarah Littrell
11. Albert Monroe married Lyde Littrell
