Appears to have been born in Maryland, moving to western Pennsylvania in 1767 with father-in-law and then to Kentucky, arriving 1 May 1780 with the Whitaker's at the "falls of the Ohio" on 14 Apr 1780.

"On the life of Honorable H. B. Standiford, who while a member of the Territorial Legislature, died at Lecompton, January 3, 1858, we quote from E. W. Robinson's History of Miami County, as follows:' By the death of Mr. Standiford, Lykins County lost one of her ablest and most widely respected citizens. He was a leader to be trusted, a friend warm and steadfast, and a citizen whose calm judgment, in public and private life, was consulted and relied upon by the entire community. In public life he was an uncompromising Free-state man; firm, but not vindictive, active, but not revengeful. He had been an anti-slavery member of the Missouri Legislature and came to Kansas in the spring of 11855, locating near the town of Stanton, where he took up his residence. He attended the special session of the Legislature which assembled at Lecompton, December 7, 1855, and died the day previous to the meeting of that body in regular sessions. His remains lie buried in the cemetery at Stanton.

Records of John Henry Standiford are on 8 LDS microfiche starting with number 6048806. He was an early day Mormon in Utah and Arizona. In his journal which he kept for years, he described his conversion to Mormonism, his every day life and struggles against the US Army. After Utah became a state, he moved one of his two families to Arizona since it was illegal to have two families in the same state. Arizona was a territory at the time.
