Mrs. J. O. Stephenson Rites at Bethel
Funeral services have been announced for this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 p.m. for
Mrs. Idella Reeves Stephenson, 94, who passed away Wednesday morning at her
residence on Bethel Road.
Rev. Frank Smith and Rev. Joe Gomes will officiate at services at Bethel Baptist
Church with burial following in the adjoining cemetery, Peck directing.
Mrs. Stephenson, a pioneer resident and one of its oldest citizens had lived in
Hartselle since the age of 3 years when she arrived in a covered wagon from
Columbus, Miss., with her parents. In 1880 she married J. O. Stephenson and
moved into her present home where she has lived for 73 years. A quiet, retiring
person, Mrs. Stephenson rarely left home save for church services at Bethel
where she has been a member for 53 years, being the oldest member at the time of
her death. In 1920, Mr. Stephenson died. Although in ill health for some time,
Mrs. Stephenson broke her hip four months ago and had been confined since.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Sam Brannon, Richard City, Tenn., and Mrs.
Clarence Waldrop, Quinton, Ala., two sons, Jake Stephenson and George
Stephenson, both of Hartselle; ten grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
