Rudolph Wright Slate, 66, retired Morgan County judge -
Funeral for Rudolph W. Slate, 66, of Hartselle will be today at 11 a.m. at Peck
Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.
Mr. Slate died Thursday, January 11, 2001, at University of Alabama Hospital at
Birmingham. He was born April 27, 1934, in Morgan County to Leonard Edward Slate
and Irene Wright Slate. He was a 1952 graduate of Morgan County High School. He
served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-58 as an instructor of radar guidance
systems at Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center. He graduated from
The University of Alabama School of Law in 1967 and practiced law in Decatur
from 1967 to 1976.
He was elected Morgan County district judge in 1976 and was appointed by Gov.
Fob James as Morgan County Circuit Judge in 1981. He was elected to the circuit
judge position in 1982 and served until his retirement in 1995. In 1996, he was
appointed to Federal Administrative Law judge for Social Security and retired
from the federal bench in 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Rex Slate of Birmingham and Robin Ray Slate of
Hartselle; two daughters, Casie Leigh Slate and Kelli Slate Caldwell, both of
Hartselle; two brothers, Royce Slate of Montgomery and Ralph Slate of Decatur;
two sisters, Margie Slate Crocker of Florence and Reba Slate Wallace of
Hartselle; and one granddaughter.
Pallbearers include Shawn Barnes, Andy Slate, Scott Slate, Ralph Slate Jr,
Randall Wallace and Ronald Wallace.
Morgan County Bar Association members will be honorary pallbearers.
