p 106-107 - "Jack Fleming Cocke, who was born in Athens, GA, on November 26, 1812, came to Mobile in 1830 to engage in the mercantile business. He and his brother, Woodson Cocke, moved to Marion prior to 1840, and established Cocke's Hotel (also referred to as 'Cocke's Tavern'. After a few years in business, Jack F. Cocke left the hotel business in order to devote his full attention to his plantation, located on Hamburg Road.... Cocke was a wealthy planter, owning 31 slaves in 1860, his brother, Woodson, owned 29.

"In 1845, Jacke F. Cocke was elected to the Alabama Senate (see Legislature), a position which he held for 16 years. In 1861, he retired from the Senate, and was defeated in an election for the Confederate Congress...

"In 1886, Jacke F. Cocke moved to Poplarville, MS, where he died on October 3, 1897, leaving numerous descendants in Perry County."
