Obit for R. L. Hopkins

R. L. HOPKINS, PIONEER CITIZEN, PASSES AWAY
HAD LIVED IN MILAM COUNTY FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY.

R. L. Hopkins died Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. W. Stedman with whom he has made his home for the past 5 years. Mr. Hopkins had been in poor health for more than a year, and less than two weeks ago was stricken with pneumonia, and the end came peacefully Monday afternoon. Mr. Hopkins was born in Perry county, Ala., Aug. 16, 1845. He was the youngest of the 13 children of Susan and Lambeth Hopkins. He was married to Miss Jennie Woolley, Nov. 25th, 1868, and to this union was born 8 children, vis: Mrs. R. W. Stedman of Cameron, Robt. W. Hopkins of Buckholts, Mrs. Henry Roundtree of Lott, John Hopkins of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Emmett Rickard, and Mrs. W. B. Watson of Quannah.

Mr. Hopkins moved to Texas in Jan. 1870, locating on Elm Creek near Buckholts where he lived until the death of his wife 12 years ago. He united with the Methodist church at the age of fourteen and lived a consistent member, his membership being at Buckholts where he worshiped until he came to Cameron to live with his daughter.

Mr. Hopkins was a Confederate soldier, having enlisted at the age of 17 in the 20th Ala. Reg. Co. F. He was captured and held prisoner for six months after the surrender at Camp Chase, Ohio.

It has been truthfully said of "Uncle Lam" as he was familiarly known, "he was a good soldier, a Christian gentleman and a true friend." He was loved by all who knew him. The beautiful floral offerings and the loving thoughtfulness of friends and neighbors bore evidence to the esteem in which he was held.

He was buried at Buckholts Tuesday morning.

Besides the children mentioned above, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. John P. Woolley of Cameron.
