"The First White Child Born West of the Coosa River"

The Shelby Chronicle
Thursday, February 3, 1887

MRS. N.C. STURDIVANT
The subject of this brief stretch gently passed away at her residence at Shelby Iron Works on Saturday morning, January 29th, 1887, aged 70, and was laid to rest in the quiet grove at Beaver Creek Church. Her remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. N. was the relict of N.C. Sturdivant, Esq., deceased, one of the earlier settlers of Tallapoosa county. Mrs. N. was not reared in the lap of luxury, that breeds indolence. Her father was a bold energetic pioneer, who pushed his way into this country when it was a wilderness, when nothing but the howl of the wolf and the whoop of the red man broke the solemn silence of the illimitable forest. She was the first white child born west of the Coosa river. Her early training no doubt contributed largely to the formation of a character marked for its open candor and generosity, positive kindness, intense patriotism, an unbounded faith in the God of her fathers, coupled with open and avowed hatred for all enemies of her country - the South. Her country she loved with an intense devotion rarely equaled. A noble woman! Grand in her simplicity. She worshipped God in simplicity, and had but little faith in the namby pamby religion of this degenerate day, when the youth of the land are incited to attend Sunday school, not to study the truths of the Bible, but to learn the tenets of some particular denomination by a free distribution of cards, a “May-day picnic” and a few tin horns and French harps on a Christmas tree at the end of the year. No, she worshipped a God who gave her strength through the vicissitudes of youth and grace during the severe trials of old age, which enabled her to bear with unmurmuring patience a long protracted death by inches from cancer. Her noble, generous soul has winged its flight to a haven of rest. Her trials are ended. May those who know her emulate her example.
