BOLDO SCHOOL

(Submitted by Willie Barton)

The first school at Boldo was erected 1878. It was a little log one-room building located about 1/2 mile south of where the present 69 Hwy/Boldo Cut off Road is. They called it the Wildhog School. The students sat on roughly-hewn log benches, marking their lessons on slates. Mr. John B. Hughes was the teacher.

In July, 1885 the school burned. A new one was erected in a more central location (north of present 69 Hwy close to the present Primitive Baptist Church).  In 1911 a newer building with more class room was built close by. On February 24, 1941 the school once more caught fire and burned to the ground. Senator Lister Hill obtained funding for the construction of a new school at Boldo. It was built directly across the 69 highway where it remained until the Boldo and Union Chapel schools were combined and named Valley School.
