George, Russell
My GGGF was Russell George, b.ca 1833 SC. He enlisted in Capt. S. D.
McClellen's Co F, 9th AL Battalion on February 11, 1862 in Calhoun Co. This
CO F started out in the 9th, was CO F of the 18th AL Infantry Regiment
(Probably at Shiloh) and was CO F of the 58th AL at Chickamauga. Russell
died of Pneumonia on October 26, 1863 at Hill Hospital (Probably Corps
Commander Henry Harvey Hill's Hospital), Ringgold, GA. His 8 year old son
recalled that his father came home on a 10 day furlough, was sick, went
back and never came home again) Presumably this furlough was between the
battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 in which he had participated and
his death. We presume him to be buried probably around Ringgold along the
Railroad but would love to discover other info. I obtained names of others
who died in the same hospital as he the same time but had no luck on
them either. The only record is one made by the surgeon that he had a $10
gold piece on him and another record was made 6 months later when they gave
the gold piece to the widow.
Of note, Bushrod Jones was LTC in charge of the 9th and was COL in charge
of the 58th. CPT McClellan was always commander of Co F, wherever it was.
He was from Calhoun Co. I have a copy of a hand written muster roll of Co
F, 9th which includes my Russell George and several others who enlisted on
the same day as he did, Feb 11, 1862 for one year as well as who held what
rank. These same soldiers are in the 18th Infantry, Co F, which does not
track with some of the published material on AL units. I have a photo of
Russell George in uniform with his rifle.
