Fayette County, Alabama
~ Fayette County Courthouse ~
(Then & Now)
View of the old County Courthouse, looking west across Temple Avenue
from the Turner Hotel (second floor of Harkin's
Store).
The year
is about 1892. Nearly 20 years later (March
1911), a fire started
on this side of the street.
Fanned by high winds, it raged out of
control and consumed the courthouse and most of
the town.
The citizens of Fayette made a fast recovery and built a
new courthouse on the same spot about 1912.
Here is how the
courthouse appeared in 2004 after a recent renovation.
