1. BENJAMIN LEE was born ca 1797 in Georgia and died after 1860 in Fayette Co., AL.  He is buried in a pasture south of Winfield.  Parents unknown.

He married in Georgia, MARGARET "Peggy" STEADMAN, who was born ca 1787 in North Carolina.  She died after 1860 in Fayette Co., AL, and is buried near her husband Benjamin.  Parents unknown.

This family was recorded on the U.S. census in Tuscaloosa Co., AL, in 1830 and in Pickens Co., AL, in 1840.  These enumerations reveal that Benjamin and Peggy had at least one other son born between 1820/1830, whose identity is unknown at this time.  By the 1850 census, the couple had moved north to Marion Co., AL, and all of their children had left the home.  The 1860 census finds them living "next door" to son Samuel in neighboring Fayette County.  Federal land records suggest that they resided about four miles south of Winfield.  They then disappeared from the records.

This family moved from Marion Co., AL, to Woodruff Co., AR, in the mid-to-late 1870s.  David LEE was recorded as a farm laborer in or near DeView, AR, on the 1880 U.S. census.  He died apparently before the next census of 1900, which shows Mrs. Mary LEE living with her son William in Oktibbeha Co., MS.



3. SAMUEL A. (Green?) LEE was born ca 1825 in Georgia and died (1863/1865) in the Civil War.  He married (1) MARGARET WHITE, who died apparently before 1860.  He married (2) SUSAN (LEE) HUGGINS, who was born ca 1830 in Georgia to James LEE and Hannah WOODWARD.

4. JOHN CLINTON LEE was born 1830, probably in Tuscaloosa Co., AL, and died 1867 in Marion Co., AL.  He married MARY GANN, who was born 1836 in Alabama and died 1894 in Alabama.  They are buried in Mt. Willing Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette Co., AL.

John Clinton LEE enlisted in the 43rd Alabama Infantry, Co. F, CSA, in April 1862.  Military records reveal that he was 5 feet 9½ inches tall with dark hair and blue eyes.  He was captured at Hatchers Run, VA, 25 Mar 1865 and later sent to the prison camp for Confederates at Point Lookout, MD.  He was released in June 1865, leaving with only the clothes on his back and a recently contracted case of tuberculosis.  John rode on a train from Maryland to Tennessee then walked the rest of the way home.  His health steadily declined after his return.  He died of T.B. in 1867 under a shade tree in his yard.  John did not like the idea of fighting for rich slave owners against the American Flag, but he did.  I believe he gave his life for his country just as if he had died on the battlefield [1].



5. JAMES LOUIS "Jim" LEE was born 03 Mar 1831 in Pickens Co., AL, and died 24 Nov 1904 in Marion Co., AL.  He married MARY ISABELL BERRYHILL, who was born 31 Dec 1836 and died 30 Oct 1907.  They are buried in Glen Allen Methodist Cemetery, Fayette Co., AL.

 SUSAN HUGGINS was born Jul 1857 in Georgia and was last known to be living in Lee Precinct, Fayette Co., AL, in 1920 (census).  She married ca 1878 in Alabama, THOMAS J. "Bud" MOORE, who was born Dec 1856 in Georgia.
