- Holland BELL was elected circuit clerk in 1874, the same
year his father was elected county treasurer. He later
served a distiguished career as Fayette County probate
judge. He and Margarette MILES had seven children.

- Robert BERRY Jr. left North Carolina with his wife, Mary
CAMP, in the 1820s and moved with several of his children to
Fayette County. The neighborhood in which they settled

- About 1847, Stephen CASH left his home on the banks of the
Savannah River in South Carolina with his large family and
headed west bound for Mississippi. His brothers and
sisters remained behind on the Georgia side of the
river. From pension application documents, it is plain
the Georgia family members never knew where Stephen finally
settled, or that he lived past 1860. Stephen got as far
as old Fayette County (Millport and Kennedy area now in Lamar
County), where he settled for good. Many of his
descendants still live in the area. Associated surnames

- Alvis DAVIS and his wife, Elizabeth GREGORY, arrived in
Fayette County in the late 1820s. They appear to have
settled a few miles south of Fayette Court House. Alvis
was a brother to Matthew, William, and John Hawkins DAVIS (see
below). Allied families include APPLING, GRAY, HENRY,
McCLUNG, MORROW, PALMER, RAY, THOMPSON, WHITLEY, and possibly
BERRYHILL and KIZIAH (KIZZIAH).

- Methodist circuit rider John Hawkins DAVIS settled in
Fayette County about 1829. He acquired property about 4½
miles north of Fayette Court House and, with his wife Nancy
Franklin GORE, reared 10 children there. After her death
in 1867, John moved to Lauderdale Co., MS, remarried and had
one more child before his own death in 1875. Related

- Township 16 South, Range 13 West, of Fayette County was
first settled by many families that eventually united in
marriage through their children. The earliest settlers
being brothers Levi, William L. and Jacob LINDSEY, who came
from Tennessee. The custom of those days to name
children after close members of the family has complicated our
genealogical searching today. Brothers married sisters,
and these families tended to live next door to each
other. By 1900, Charles M. FREEMAN and wife Lona LINDSEY
had settled on a farm just east of Belk. That old farm
home was a favorite gathering place for their descendants into
the early 1970s. Long after the passing of Pa FREEMAN,
his hand-made tile covering fireplaces and kitchen counter

- With his wife, Joanna STEWART, Walter HARKINS lived in South
Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee before settling about 5 miles
north of present-day Fayette, AL, in the early 1800s.

- William Stewart HARKINS was married about 1828 in Fayette
County to Catherine Lemons "Katy"

died while in the service of the Confederate army. Two
other sons survived the War and reared large families.

- George TUCKER served in the Wilkes Co., GA, militia during
the Revolutionary War. He and his second wife, Martha
NICHOLS, moved to Fayette County sometime before 1826.
They settled on 160 acres of federal land in present-day
Bazemore. "Most of
today's Fayette and Marion County TUCKERs, and those
residents who have TUCKER ancestors, are descendants of Old
George and his [first] wife, Rebecca LEVERETT."

- The VICE family can be traced from the Colony of Virginia to
North Carolina, to South Carolina, and ultimately to
Alabama. Morgan VICE, the grandson of John VICE,
established his family in Fayette County before 1850.
