1.  John VICE was born about 1755, probably in Orange County, Virginia Colony, and died in Jul 1833 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina, about age 78.  John married Francis ROEBUCK (a/k/a Frankey ROEBUCK), daughter of George ROEBUCK Jr. and Mary WARREN, about 1773, probably in North Carolina.  Francis was born about 1755 in Orange County, Virginia Colony, and died after 1828.  Children from this marriage were:

4	F	iii.	Roda VICE.  Roda married (---) LAWRENCE (perhaps Peter LAWRENCE, whose will was proved on the oath of John VICE in August 1807).
5	M	iv.	George VICE, died in 1850 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina.
6	M	v.	Levi VICE.
7	F	vi.	(---) VICE, died before 1850 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina.
8	M	vii.	Ruben VICE was born on 4 Jul 1782 and died on 15 Jan 1853 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina, at age 70.  Ruben married Sarah (---).
9	M	viii.	Eliphous Hosea VICE was born about 1785 and died after 1835 in Perry County, Tennessee.  Eliphous married Elizabeth (---).
10	F	ix.	Elizabeth VICE was born on 15 May 1785 probably in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and died on 27 Nov 1839 in Hickman, Tennessee, at age 54.  Elizabeth married Thomas WRIGHT.
11	M	x.	Abner VICE was born about 1790 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina.  Abner married Lucinda PREWITT.
12	M	xi.	Azariah VICE was born in 1779 and died on 6 Oct 1854 in Spartenburg County, South Carolina, at age 75.  Azariah married Jane POOLE in 1818.  (More research is needed to connect this Azariah to John VICE.)

NOTES:

Most of the names and some of the early history of the VICE  family (above and below) can be attributed to the excellent research of Carol MIDDLETON [1] and Sabra SUDBERRY. 

Louise NICOL HENDON had this in her Bible: "The later VICE family did not approve of slaves but somewhere back there were some slaves in the family.  I once saw a set of eight chairs (simple and beautiful of design and made by slaves.  I also saw pewter platters and plates that had been in use in the family since before the Revolutionary War.)"

Resided in Chatham County, North Carolina, in 1774/75.

Will of John VICE:

I John VISE [sic], being in a very low state of health but of a sound and propper disposing mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my boddy and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in the manner and form following that is to say principally and first I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who give it and my boddy I recommend to the Earth to be decently intered at the discretion of my Executors hoping to use again at the resurrection of the Just, and as touching all my worldly Estate which it hath pleased God to bless me with:

I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid first: and having no wife; and having given and bequeathed previous to this to all my Children the portion which I allotted to them but my two sons Abner VICE and Eli VICE; I now give and bequeath to my son Abner VICE one third of the tract of land where on he now lives convenient to him.  The remaining part of the tract I will and bequeath to my son Eli VICE also all my personal propperty I Will and bequeath to my son Eli VICE; also all my personal propperty I excepting one feather bed I will and bequeath to my grand daughter Elvi VICE the daughter of Zery VICE my son.  The house I formaly lived in is standing on the land I bequeathed to my son Abner VICE I except which I will and bequeath to my son Eli VICE to move or dispose of as he things propper.  I do also nominate and appoint my two beloved sons Abner VICE and Eli VICE Executors of this my last Will and Testament.  I do here by revoke and disannul all my former wills by me made before Rattifying this and no other to be my last Will and Testament.  In witness where of I do hereunto set my hand and affix my seal.

2.  John Roebuck VICE was born in 1777 in Calhoun County, Alabama, died in 1858, at age 81, and was buried in Old Cemetery at Fort McClellan, Alabama [2, 3].  John married Martha PREWITT, daughter of Alexander PREWITT and Francis (Fanny) PALMER.  Martha was born in 1781.  Children from this marriage were:

13	M	i.	Nathaniel VICE.  Nathaniel married Dorky MEADOWS.  (Appears in the 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, & 1840 censuses for Spartanburg Co., SC.)
14	M	ii.	Robert VICE.  Robert married Polly (---).
15	M	iii.	Frederick H. VICE was born in 1801.  Frederick married Sarah (---).
16	F	iv.	Clarissa VICE was born in 1804.  Clarissa married William THORNTON on 15 Jul 1825 in Pickens County, Alabama.
17	M	v.	John Roebuck VICE was born in 1806.  John married Mary "Polly" (---).  (In Pickens Co., AL, in 1850 and in Marengo Co., AL, by 1860.)
18	M	vi.	Willis VICE was born in 1810.
19	M	vii.	Meredith VICE was born in 1811.  Meredith married Mary MILLER.
+20	M	viii.	Morgan VICE, (circa 1813)-(?)
21	F	ix.	Sabra VICE was born in 1815.  Sabra married Alexander ROBERTS in Pickens County, Alabama.

NOTES:

John was known as Roebuck VICE.  John Roebuck may have been the boy that my Aunt Louise NICOL HENDON wrote about in her Bible: As a boy of 14 at the time of the Revolutionary War, he ran away from home to become a soldier but since he was so young, he was made a water boy.  Appears on the 1810, 1820, 1830 census for Spartanburg Co., SC.  After he grew up, he married Martha and they went to Benton (now Calhoun) Co., AL.

"Those received into the Friendship Church in 1840 were: John VICE and Mary VICE
Received by experience and baptism: 1846 Martha VICE and Robuck VICE, Phillip PREWITT.
Letters of dismission: 1852 - John VICE and wife Mary
Sept. 1848 charge against Robuck VISE for drinking too much spirits.
Feb. 9, 1856 Brother E.D. LEWIS charged sister Martha VICE of getting drunk and using unbecoming language.
This taken from the minutes of Friendship Meting Hous (sic), Benton Co., AL (now Calhoun). 
The church was constituted March 5, 1836 by Rev. Wm. H. HOLCOB and Hosea ROCKET.  It is now First Baptist Church of Oxford, AL.
Nov. 1840 recd by letter into fellowship bro. John VICE
Dec. 1840 recd by etter into fellowship sister Mary VICE."

These church records are on microfilm at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama:
"Hannah VICE was Obediah's wife [Sabra did not find him in the minutes].  The others listed with her were their children.  They include Sary Ann VISE, Louiza VISE,  Frances VISE, Susan VISE.

John and Mary VICE (these are probably the John Roebuck [#17 above] and Mary 'Polly' ... children of Martha PREWITT and John Roebuck VICE) moved their letters from here to Mt. Zion Bapt. Ch. at Alexandria, AL and then moved to Post Oak Springs Bapt Ch. where they were charter members.  Seems in 1857 a Methodist preacher came to the community and was denouncing the Baptists' way of baptizing.  He shouted, 'Down with Post Oak' in retaliation to their outbursts at him.  Mary VICE was in the congregation and she made headlines by slapping her hands and shouting: 'Glory to God, hallelujah.  I live in Post Oak, I drink the water out of the spring which runs under Post Oak Tree, and I'm glad I do, glory, glory, glory to God, hallelujah!'  Soon joined and supported vocally by others of the angry congregation, Mrs. VICE ended her defense with, 'I want to know your name, you old ugly freckled faced preacher, you, for your name's not in the book.' "

20.  Morgan VICE was born about 1813 in South Carolina, and died in Alabama.  Morgan married Louisa PRICE, daughter of Jackson PRICE.  Louisa was born about 1823 in South Carolina.  Children from this marriage were [1, 4]:

29	M	viii.	William A. VICE was born on 22 May 1859, died on 21 Nov 1946, at age 87, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama.  William married Loutishie WALDEN (b. 27 Aug 1863, d. 28 Apr 1936).

NOTES:

Morgan VICE came into Alabama from South Carolina.  Was probably in Pickens Co., AL, in 1834; he is shown as a witness in a land application for George ROEBUCK, son of Benjamin and Mary WILLIS ROEBUCK.  He and Lucretia [sic] were living in Fayette Co., AL, during the 1860 census.  Shown as age 27 in 1850 census, Fayette Co., AL.  Shown as age 47 in 1860 census, Fayette Co., AL (aged 20 years in 10 years, I don't think so). Was probably 37 in 1860.

26.  Simeon W. VICE was born about 1853 in Alabama, and died in Trussville, Jefferson County, Alabama.  Simeon married Nancy WILSON, daughter of John WILSON and Hulda HUGHES, on 25 Jul 1873 in the home of James WILSON [5].  Nancy was born about 1858.

NOTES:

Simeon and Nancy VICE were living in Kennedy in Lamar Co., AL, in the 1880 census.  Simeon owned a newspaper, the Kennedy News, which he began in 1891.  The house where they lived still stands.  Later they moved to Nauvoo in Walker Co., AL, where they had a farm.  Simeon also sold mechanical sewing machines (a new invention); his grandson, James Wilson NICOL, remembers riding around in a horse buggy with Papa VICE to sell the machines.




28.  Clara Jane VICE was born on 17 Jun 1856, died on 2 Sep 1941 in Fayette County, Alabama, at age 85, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama [4].  Clara married John Willard RAY, son of Elijah RAY and Lucy Ann WRIGHT, on 25 Nov 1874 in the home of Morgan VICE [6].  John was born on 11 Jan 1853, died on 3 May 1942 in Fayette County, Alabama, at age 89, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama.  Children from this marriage were [4, 7]:

30	M	i.	Sidney RAY was born in 1875, died on 4 Oct 1954, at age 79, and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.  Sidney married Velma SUDDUTH.
31	M	ii.	Walter Scott RAY died on 16 Aug 1972 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.  Walter married (1) Martha GILLARD.  Walter next married (2) Hazel WELLS.
32	M	iii.	James Arthur RAY was born in 1879, died on 6 Mar 1964, at age 85, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama.  James married Stella SUDDUTH.  Stella was born on 8 Jun 1882, died on 11 Sep 1932, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery.
33	M	iv.	Oscar RAY was born on 20 Jul 1882 in Fayette, Alabama, died on 17 May 1965 in Fayette Hospital, Fayette, Fayette County, Alabama, at age 82, and was buried on 19 May 1965 in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama.  Oscar married Doshie Evelyn CLANTON, daughter of Howell Chisum CLANTON and Mary Edith BRANYON [8], on 24 Jun 1909 in Fayette, Alabama.  Doshie was born on 2 Dec 1890 in Fayette County, Alabama, died on 1 Jun 1975 in Fayette Nursing Home, Fayette, Alabama, at age 84, and was buried on 3 Jun 1975 in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery.
34	M	v.	Burl RAY was born on 11 Jan 1888, probably in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, died on 4 Jul 1972 in Northport, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, at age 84, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama [9].  Burl married Maggie Hunnicutt SNOW.  Maggie was born on 1 Aug 1895 in Lamar County, Alabama, and died on 12 Sep 1988 in Northport, Alabama, at age 93.
35	M	vi.	Earl RAY was born on 29 Jun 1890, died on 23 Oct 1978, at age 88, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette County, Alabama.  Earl married Georgia Belle BAKER on 10 Jun 1919.  Georgia was born on 9 Jan 1899, died on 17 Dec 1969, at age 70, and was buried in Shepherd Baptist Church Cemetery.
