Joseph GRAY was born about 1790 in South Carolina. His wife, Mary --?--, was born about 1794 in South Carolina. They are believed to be the progenitors of the following line of Grays in Fayette County.

Joseph and Mary GRAY first appeared in Fayette County on the 1860 U.S. census. They were recorded beside James W. GRAY, who was born 25 November 1817 in North Carolina and died 25 May 1902 in Fayette County. James married Matilda J. DAVIS, the daughter of Alvis DAVIS and Elizabeth GREGORY. Matilda was born 7 Jul 1823 in Alabama and died 6 June 1913. They were married about 1841 and were both buried at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Fayette County.

Second Generation

8. Christopher Columbus GRAY (1854-1940) married (1) Caroline "Callie" HOLLAND, the daughter of William HOLLAND, 1881 in Gibson Co., TN. She was born about 1856 in TN. There was only one issue of this marriage: Lily GRAY (b. May 1884), who married Lionel Edgar RAINEY. Caroline HOLLAND GRAY died when Lily was 9 days old.

Christopher C. GRAY married (2) Amanda HOWELL, the daughter of James HOWELL, 1885 in Gibson Co., TN. They had the following children:

3. Callie May Holland GRAY, born 1890; married W.C. TAYLOR
