Linda Armstead Wed, 07 Jan 1998 08:47:55
My name is Linda Armstead.  I was born and raised in Bazemore, Alabama.  I went to school at West Highland School in Fayette.  I have been researching my family history.  It becomes very difficult when your family was slaves.  I have been trying to determine what farm my family came from and who was the slave master.  My grandfather's name was Marshall Rice and lived in Palestine.  My grandmother's name was Anaky Nalls Rice, and she also grew up in Palestine.  Since they were born during slavery, I have not been able to go back any further.  I was common that slaves took the name of their master.  Do you have any info on any Nalls or Rices?

My other set of Grandparents were Eben "Babe" McCollum born and raised in Bazemore, and my grandmother, Adeline Glascot McCollum.  I am not sure where Adeline came from since she was a Cherokee Indian.  Any knowledge you have would be appreciated.

BERRY

Janeva K. Bailey  Sun, 11 Jan 1998 17:39:25
Here are two generations of a family who lived in Fayette Co, AL, as adults before the Civil War.  I didn't see any of them on your list.  There are also several other families who married into this one.  I hope you can use this [see William Berry family at Fayette County Family Records].  I have a webpage that includes these families and ancestors and descendants. If you go to http://www.creativewoodworking.com [Not valid as of 09 Aug 2003].  Scroll down and click on the link to Janeva's genealogy page then the report of ancestors of Lloyd Alfred Schrimpf, it has these Berrys and more.  ["Janeva's genealogy page" address as of 09 Aug 2003 http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/a/i/Janeva-K-Bailey/index.html]  If you'd like to add it to your county page that would be fine

FRANCES ANN ELIZEBETH JONES was my gggrandmother, born 9 April 1832 and died 10 April 1891, buried in Gaines Cemetery, Gaines Hill, Corona, Walker Co., AL.  She was married to George Shipp Gaines.  According to his obituary, published in the Mountain Eagle, Jasper, AL. She was born in Fayette County.  I do not know who any of her family was.  We have history on the Gaines, Pendleton, Strother and Gravlee branches of the family, but absolutely none on the Jones branch.  Do you have her listed in your Jones genealogy or can you provide a possible link?  I live in Gadsden, but am a native of Walker County.  Any info will be very much appreciated.  If I can reciprocate any info I'll be happy to do so.  C.M. HARVELL • HICKS • PRICE • ALLMAN

Sandy Cooper Mon, 02 Feb 1998 11:42:28
My mother, Juanice HARVELL Sandy was born in Fayette, AL, in 1925.  Her parents were Rube HARVELL (b. 11/1894 in AL) and Lona HICKS Harvell (b. 3/1894 in AL).  Lona Hicks's parents were Columbus (Lumb) HICKS (b. 1874 or 75 in AL) and Elizabeth PRICE Hicks -- DOB and place unknown.  Rube's parents were George HARVELL (b. 1872) and Sarah Alice ALLMAN (b. 10/1869).  I have reason to believe that all of the above mentioned likely lived in the Fayette area at some time in the past.  My g.grandparents, Lumb and Lizzy HICKS, lived in Beach Grove, AL while I was growing up in Cullman, AL, from 1942-1954, when I moved to Oregon.  My grandmother, Lona Hicks Harvell, talked about Fayette and the area of  "Black Bottom."  Does anyone know WHERE Black Bottom is located?  Will gladly share info I have with anyone researching these names.  Thanks.  "Sandy" Cooper in Oregon

26th Alabama Infantry • WAKEFIELD

Tod L. Molesworth Tue, 10 Feb 1998 18:05:03
Am trying to put a muster list of the 26th Alabama together.  This is like a needle in a haystack.  Most of the 26th soldiers were from Fayette County as well as Marion.  I see in the 1860 Census of Fayette that a Benjamin Wakefield and James Monroe Wakefield both served in the CSA, but there is no regiment listed.  Benjamin died in Virginia.  Would anyone know what regiment they served in?   If it's the 26th, then please let me know.

ALFAYETT Mail List

Monya Havekost Wed, 11 Feb 1998 22:03:55
I am the listowner for the new Fayette Co. AL mailing list <ALFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com>.

I received the message below from John Fuller, who you probably know has a great site listing genealogy resources which I've used many times.  He has offered to publicize the new list on his site and several others and, with your permission, would provide a link to your Fayette Co. web page.

I would like my e-mail list to be included at the web sites.  If you would like a link to your Fayette Co. page, please let him know by e-mailing:  John Fuller

Hi Monya:

I see that you have started the ALFAYETT mailing list and would like to include an entry for it in the Genealogy Resources on the Internet file that I coauthor with Chris Gaunt.  This file is a rather well-known compilation of genealogy-related resources that includes sites for mailing lists, FTP, newsgroups, Telnet, Gopher, WWW, and email.  You can access the file at http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/internet.html

If you are interested in having your list included in the file (free of course!), I propose the following entry which is in the format I have been using for other county lists on rootsweb (corrections gratefully accepted including the correct URL for your web page).  BTW, if you don't own the Fayette County web page, you would need to get permission from the owner to include the link or modify the entry by deleting reference to the web page.

ALFAYETT.  A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in Fayette County, Alabama.  Interested individuals may want to check out the Fayette County ALGenWeb page.

Mailing address for postings is alfayett-l@rootsweb.com.  To subscribe send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to alfayett-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or alfayett-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode).

FYI, the entries on my web pages are considered to be the "official" descriptions of genealogy mailing lists.  Once we agree on an entry for your list, I will send it to Karen Isaacson (RootsWeb), Cyndi Howells, and Vicki Lindsay so they can add the information to their web pages.  This way you get advertising on the four sites that really count ... and they are all consistent.  It also saves you the time and trouble of writing to them. I will also post the entry to the NEW-GENLIST mailing list to provide additional exposure.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

CURETON

Glenn Allen Sun, 22 Feb 1998 07:09:32
I am looking for any information and the burial place of Bolin CURETON, born abt 1755, died in Fayette County 1830-40. We think he was buried at the Boley Springs cemetery in NE Fayette Co. AL.

I have visited Boley Springs cemetery and I did not find Boley's grave.  There were many unmarked graves there but I have no way of knowing if he was buried in one of them

You have a very nice page.  Thanks, Glenn Allen, email url http://www.rootsweb.com/~alwinsto/

BOONE • CANNON • CHAPPELL • JOHNSTON

Susan Boone Mickey Sun, 22 Feb 1998 23:48:49
Bravo!  You have done a beautiful job with the Fayette Co page!  Congrats!  I had not visited the sight in some time (in fact, my link was no longer valid and I had to update it) and was surprised and excited to see all of the changes and all of the information which has been posted.  What a wonderful resource for those of us with deep roots in Fayette Co.

My father was born and raised in Berry and his family lines include Boone, Cannon, Chappell, Johnston and others.  I did notice that Miles Chappell is not listed among the early settlers.  Miles and his wife Priscilla settled in Fayette Co about 1822, moving there from Tennessee, and lived there for over 60 years until ill health forced them to move to their daughter's home in Tuscaloosa Co.  Miles was a pensioner of the War of 1812.  They raised a family of 13 children, many of whom remained in Fayette Co.  I have transcribed copies of a wonderful series of articles written by Sharlene McGee Stough and published in the "Winding Trails" column of the Fayette County Broadcaster in 1981.  It gives the entire genealogy of Miles' & Priscilla's family down through their grandchildren as well as Miles' descent from Thomas Chappell who immigrated to Virginia in 1635.  Also included is a great little piece about Miles' & Priscilla's ongoing fight of 38 years with the government over Miles' War of 1812 pension.  I found the orginals of these in a vertical file at the Birmingham Public Library about 15 years ago.  I made photocopies, of course, but they did not copy very well so I have since transcribed them.  I would love to locate better copies of the originals as well as any other columns which may have been published later. (There is a little "teaser" at the end of the last article which says "in the future this column will present stories on many of these descended families such as the Whitsons, Johnsons, Davises, Stanleys....").  If you can offer any suggestions as to where I might write to or look for copies of the Broadcaster I would sincerely appreciate it.  Keep up the GREAT work!  Let me know if I can help in anyway.  God Bless
Susan Boone Mickey ~ Bradenton FL
