There are several unmarked graves located outside the
David Lindsay Historical Site that were graves of the slaves of James P. Lacey,
father of Daniel Boone Lacey. There is only one marked grave, Sam Lacy, "Father",
born 1834 - died 1917.
The Birmingham News, Friday, December 18, 1953 ~ "DAR succeeds in long search for hero's grave ... A
gleaming new bronze plaque was erected over the grave of a famous Alabama
Revolutionary soldier this week, bringing to a trimphant climax a year of study
and searching. Daniel Boone Lacey, 90-year-old Maylene, Ala., resident, had
maintained for years that a Revolutionary War hero was buried in his family's
cemetery plot. The painstaking search began when members of the David Lindsay
Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Montevallo, heard that this
might be the hero for whom their group was named. Mrs. A.W. Vaughn, genealogical
chairman, conducted the research, traveling in search of clues for more than 10
months, before finding conclusive evidence that here, almost in her own back
yard, was the grave of the honored soldier...."
