The Genealogical Society of East Alabama P. O. Box 2892 Opelika, AL 36803-2892 The GSEA is a non-profit corporation, and an all volunteer organization. It is governed by a Constitution and By-Laws and run by a slate of elected officers and Board of Directors. Since its beginning in 1963, we have served a five county area of East Central Alabama which included Chambers, Lee, Macon, Russell and Tallapoosa. Each quarter since 1963, in July, October, January and April, the Society has published a quarterly called Tap Roots. Within the five county area, more than 400 cemeteries have been enumerated and published in Tap Roots and/or special editions. Also, more than 600 family records such as Family Bible Records and Family Histories have been published. Many community items and church histories have also been included. Many old newspaper articles have been reprinted. The earliest marriage records for Chambers, Lee, Russell and Tallapoosa Counties have also been published. Many articles regarding the War Between the States together with the muster rolls of soldiers from this area have also been enumerated. The Society has worked very hard to preserve the rich history within our area. We are very proud of what the Society has already accomplished and are ever mindful of the enormous job yet to be done. We promote the sharing of genealogical information. If you are a paid researcher who collects fees from clients for your research services, we respectfully ask that you disclose this fact when requesting information.
